I'll just add this. I don't know if it's significant or not.
My daughter, 6, loves to learn about the Bible and we read Pilgrim's Progress and she loves reading about Jesus, Noah and Moses and Joshua...A couple of days ago she wanted to watch her tape "Creation" by Hannah Barbara (which she's watched many times) so I put it in and went out to feed the chickens. She came out quite soon after and was visibly shaken. She said she didn't want to watch that - she was nervous. She wanted to watch something else like Spongebob or Little Bear but not anything that had to do with heaven. She said she didn't want to talk about it and said she was very nervous. I said, "Well, I will just say one thing and then we can drop it - heaven is the loveliest and safest place you can be." Yes, she knew that but she didn't want to talk about it because she was nervous. Later in the day she said it wasn't heaven she was so worried about, it was the rapture. I told her that the rapture was a good thing - a wonderful thing. I didn't know if it would happen soon but if it did then all pain and suffering would be over. Later, we were sitting together on the couch and she was still nervous and thought she might be sick. So, I got a bucket and we sat back down and I said that when I was really nervous, I prayed. Jesus is always there to listen and He loves you so much. So, she shut her eyes and prayed. But the last 2 days she's been sticking to me like a tick and doesn't want me out of her sight and last night she threw up. I think maybe she's scared of either being left behind or losing track of me in the air. Scared of the unknown. Afraid of people she loves being left behind...

Spirtual abuse. God help that poor child, she shouldn't be watching that kind of stuff- when I was six I was more concerned about looking like a popstar, which involved sticking socks in my shirt and wearing my mother's high heels.
Yeah, but you get my point.
@fredrick: "losing track of her in the air?"
Yeah, you know.. when they're physically lifted into heaven during the rapture.
Except, I thought the rapture meant they were just suddenly gonna disappear without a trace (or their clothes and watches and bracelets and stuff)..?
I see. You would think that the authors of the bible would have included a pre-flight check list, not unlike the ones the astronauts use right before lift off.
Perhaps the church should insert an addendum into the bible.
Rapture Take Off Procedures:
(x)Wear Proper Attire. [No Skirts]
(x)Congregate In An Open Air location
(x)Secure Tether To Nearby Loved Ones
(_)Wait for Jesus Tractor Beam Acquisition

I don't believe for one second that a six year old sat down and read Pilgrims' Progress with you.

Congratulations on f***ing up your kid with this malignant fairy tale. I've got a dollar that says your little girl will grow up to be a highly paid exotic dancer. And if she does I'll take the dollar I win from you and make her pick it up off the stage with her ass cheeks.

... or she's a little kid who was terrified by a movie that should only be seen by adults, but is okay to show a 6-year-old because it's "religion".
May be it should be rated PG at least.
Asw a sidenote:
I woner why there are no earnest attempt to classify the bible itself as PG-13 or even R.
Considering the violence and sexual content this might be really advised. Children of lower ages might even get strange ideas rom reading the bible, for example that women are generally submissive to men, that slavery is O.K. or even, that killing nonbelievers is somthign you have to do.
I used to read the bible with my mom when I was pretty young, it was complicated, but I got the jist of it. I know how this poor kid feels.
When I read about death and rapture, I was latching onto my mom for nearly a week afterwards. I even refused to sleep in my own bed for a long time after that.
I'm thinking this lady has pretty much screwed up her daughter's brain to the point of breaking.
Fundies should really wait 'till their kids are at least 10 before they start teaching the freaky shit.
Jeez. That's really something if religion is making a child so terrified they throw up. These people can't even let six year olds have a happy childhood. Shouldn't 'loving Jesus' be enough? Why even meantion Rapture/dying?
These people are so fucked up.
This is so sad...
Unfortunately, the whole 'lose track of me in the air' bit has made me think that all the people that are, oh, let's say inside a building, will get left behind. Unless your rapture beam is going to pull you right through the roof of whatever structure you are in - and that cannot be fun. Fundies against a roof like moths against a light bulb :) bump bump bump...
I think you should -all- stay outside from now on. Maybe the rapture hasn't happened because there were some structures between the faithful and heaven, and the moment you can organise all the faithful on earth to be outside at the same time you will be raptured. Go on, it might work out better than your current plan.
I told her that the rapture was a good thing - a wonderful thing. I didn't know if it would happen soon but if it did then all pain and suffering would be over.
Um, according to your wacked-out tenets, the rapture marks the beginning of a rather large amount of pain and suffering for the majority of the earth's population; I guess other peoples' hardship is just unimportant to you.
I'm sure everyone will agree you need to STFU and DIAF, bitch. How could you do that to your child - don't you remember what it was like to be 6 years old? You feel powerless over everything and you are apt to believe anything your parents tell you you should, so you go and tell her this rapture bullshit and literally make her sick with terror. You are a terrible person and you should tell her that shit is all a big lie and she doesn't have to worry about it. She may never trust you again, but that's what you deserve. No child should have to live in fear of a wrathful god. Jesus I hate people like you, you destroy lives with this shit and you don't even have a clue you're doing it. Pathetic.
It's kind of funny, but I went to a southern baptist church growing up and they are really BIG on the rapture and shit; however, I was fourteen before I was actually introduced to the concept. It was never in the sermons. In a way, I respect those people a little more now.
Tangentially, I knew a pilot who worried about being raptured while flying. It actually bothered his conscience that the majority of his passengers might die.
Anyhoo...I wish we could find this lady and report her to CPS, someone, anyone. Ah...well.
Ah, let the kid watch spongebob, it's about as believeable as your kid's "creation" tape, and spongebob is in the Bible just as many times as Rapture..,ZERO.PS Congratulations on turning your 6 year old in a neurotic basketcase who is worrying about death and your death cult fantasies instead of enjoying life. What a creepy pile of shit of a you are as a parent, murdering your child's enjoyment of childhood!
I read the other quote here on fstdt about an atheist saying teaching children Christianity is child abuse. Most of the responses to that statement were people decrying him/her as a secular fundie.
PLEASE.
The above quote is evidence enough that teaching a child Christianity IS child abuse. Those defending religion in any way need to just STFU.
Religion is NOT harmless.
Religion is NOT comforting.
Religion is NOT beautiful.
That must be some fucked up shit. I remember watching all kinds of gory horror films when I was 6, and nothing ever made me shake and vomit for days. When your religious beliefs are that scary, it might be time to re-evaluate them.
Raising your kids in an end-times fear cult and wondering why they're scared. Because you tell them fearful stories and YOU are scared all the time.
You're a fear based religion, your political group of choice (republicans) are fear monglers and you favorite 'news' station is the Fox Fear Conspiracy machine.
I'm just a stupid Swede, but isn't it Hanna-Barbera?
I had never heard of the rapture before I came here. Most Swedes consider themselves as Christians. But they are aware that after death, you have to await Judgment Day, not until then will you be resurrected and placed alongside Jesus.
I believe that death is something like becoming unconscious, but you never come around again. I'm not afraid of dying anymore, I just don't want it to happen just yet. Let it wait another 40 or 60 years.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have never read anything about this so-called "Rapture" in the Bible. If she loves learning about the Bible, why would you teach her about something not even mentioned in it?
I know this sort of shit is sad, but I must say that bit about "losing track of me in the air" had me in stitches.
Unfortunately I was eating my breakfast cereal when I read it, so excuse me while I clean up the mess.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
