"Blasphemy is not free speech."

Blasphemy is nothing more than whatever an individual person decides upsets their personal sensibilities at any particular time. It is inherently self-centred, and ALL speech could potentially be considered blasphemy if someone decides it to be.
To ensure that blasphemy doesn't occur, ALL speech would have to be outlawed.
Yes. It is. Suck it up, princess.
Because remember, one person's blasphemy is another's sacrament. To disallow one facet of free speech, is to disallow free speech altogether. So either support it, and grow some skin, or don't, and be prepared to suffer the results as well.
Hey, you failed to capitalise the holy name of "Is" and didn't immediately follow it with the honorific "may they enternally fist me with their knobbley knuckles of wisdom" as mandated by the beliefs of Isism. Not to do so Is ("may they enternally fist me with their knobbley knuckles of wisdom") blasphemy and as such Is ("may they enternally fist me with their knobbley knuckles of wisdom") not protected as free speech. So I insist you take your page down at once.
Muslim fundamentalists say the exact same thing. You could probably get together with them if you wern't so busy arguing about whether Jesus had a bigger dick than Mohommad.
@David B.
"Knobbley knuckles of wisdom." That, sir, is pure gold.
Blasphemy is truly a victimless crime.
As a side note. The play that sparked the outrage and the petition has been cancelled by the professor . It seems they were afraid for student safety. After all, there's no lunatic like an inflamed religious lunatic.
"Blasphemy is not free speech."
And Blasphemy is a victimless crime. Your point?
Are you God, Jesus, Allah, Mohammed, YHWH or whatever deity? No? Well then. What's your problem?
Want to blaspheme me , Anon-e-moose? Go right ahead. I don't care what you say.
It would only serve to prove that I have an infinitely thicker skin than you, or the deity(ies) you claim to worship.
Yes it is. Otherwise we run into the conundrum of the existance of other religions being blasphemy to others, basic human rights being blasphemy, etc.
For example, my being a pagan is considered blasphemous by some, but I could consider Christians trying to convert me to be blasphemous.

Blasphemy is Free Speech - it is my firm belief that whatever gods there may be are sure to stop me in my tracks wayyy before I really go out of line, so I can't logically ever truly offend them. Also, Free Speech is but one of my religions, you insensitive no-good infidel. So, um, please engage your brain before you prepare to defile the logic next time.
Blasphemy of what? Saying the mighty god Odin does not exist? Belittling the mighty goddess Freya?
Yeah, how COULD anyone do such a thing? BAAAAD them! Charon will have a field day with them.
Free speech means you have the right to speak out about anything and everything you want. You should use a bit of consideration for other people's feelings, though, but that goes both ways, really. If your opponent doesn't respect your feelings, why should you respect his/hers?
OK, then I'd better not hear you saying anything about: Buddhists, Jainists, Skihs, Zoroastrians, Rastafarians, Pastafarians, those who practice Voodo or Santaria, animists, pagans, Jews.
Oh, and MUSLIMS!
Wouldn't want to blasphemy against anyone's god, now would you?
Oh, right, that rule only applies to the "one true god" -- yours.
Extremely condensed fail here, folks.

I hate to pull out the slippery slope, but in this case it's applicable. Once you make blasphemy against your god illegal and somehow make it get past the Supreme Court (I dunno, by drugging the judges?) then you'd have to extend the same to everyone else because even a drugged up judge knows you have to be fair to all citizens. This means you can't call Mohammad a false prophet or call any of the claims Islam false because that would be blasphemy. But it gets better. Most fundamentalists claim that atheism is a religion too which means that it would be blasphemous for you to talk about your god because it implies that atheists are all wrong. So now instead of the wonderful freedom of religion and freedom from religion we've all enjoyed so far, now nobody can talk about religion at all. This is the very best illustration of the principle of giving you enough rope and you hanging yourself, or it would be if I didn't care enough about the country to not allow you to learn that lesson the hard way.
I'll give them some credit, it does appear that the entire point of the play is to offend people.
Not to mention that the reasons for it being cancelled are not all that poor "No one should have the right to use government funds or institutions to portray acts that are morally reprehensible to the vast majority of Americans"
Though, I've got to say that something is "morally reprehensible" is wonderfully undefined
Oh, really? And why is that, then? Oh, cause you don't like it. Of course. Sorry, you don't get to say it's not just because you don't like it.
I remember when Nixon said dissing him was blasphemy.
Guilty as charged and I can prove it.

Well, unless this 'God' of yours is prepared to appear here in physical form to make a Federal case out of it, I'm afraid that it is . What are you personally going to do about it? Hmmmmmm...?! I don't see you & your fundie Christain ilk known as 'Jehovah', 'Yahweh', 'Elohim', 'YHWH', or 'God', therefore it has fuck all to do with you personally. Are you God? No? Well then. You don't have so much as the right to even think about having so much as an 'opinion' on the matter, if it's not you personally who's been 'blasphemed'.
And considering the ultra-brutal & hyper-savage nature of Libel & Slander laws here in the UK, which would make 900 trillion years in Hell seem like a holiday from just ten minutes of what our lawyers are capable of, you'd have thought this 'God' of yours would be throwing out the writs & private prosecutions, legal actions etc like confetti in my country: and physically appearing in the UK to do so.
Therefore a question: why isn't he doing exactly that: now ?
You may not like the answer if you dare ask yourself that question.
Confused?
