one party always trying to cut benefits for the poor and taxes for the rich. the other trying to fund social programs and increase the minimum wage.

Those aren't comparable. More comparable would be the case in which God ceases to exist, in which case the whole population, not just the majority, would no longer be able to exist. Or, perhaps, you consider the case in which we are no longer allowed to worship the government: we'd be better off then.
