[Coming from a Rapture-believing, young-earth creationist]
Anyone who follows L. Ron's teachings loses at least 95 I.Q. points. It is the most stupid made up religion ever.

I find myself in the strange position of almost agreeing with mamacags. Ugh! It gives me the creeps just thinking that.
Anyway, Scientology is *one* of the stupidest religions ever made up. The other stupid ones being all other religions.
Assuming she doesn't follow L. Ron's teachings, how does mama account for her substandard I.Q.?
hey guys, you know science fiction is a great basis for religion. and so is stealing creation myths, flood myths, and godly characteristics from neighboring civilizations.
(casting sarcasm aside) i disagree with the statement that this is the most stupid religion ever. i understand that there are a group of people who belive that jesus and andy kaufman are one and the same, and he's coming back soon. jesus sure was funny.
Well, she has a point - you would have to be a complete and utter cretin to buy into a religion that sounds like something out of a bad sci-fi movie started by a sci-fi writer who is reported to have said to numerous acquaintances, "I'd like to start a religion someday. That's where the real money is."
In terms of sheer stupidity needed, Scientology probably beats out fundie Christianity (though it's close).
The only reason this quote belongs here is the source: Mamacags, an arch-fundie. If any quotation here deserved a Pot and Kettle Award, this is the one.
Apart from the irony inherent in the source of this comment, I tend to agree (though Scientology has some tough competition in Raelianism). Modern religions, from Mormonism forward, are even crazier than ancient ones.
However, the only thing that makes Christianity and its ancient offshoots marginally less insane than modern ones is that they were created by primitive people, from whom we would expect this kind of reasoning; it's the same kind of sophistication that gave us the various other mythologies. For modern people to swallow it is just plain silly. Existence of a deity? Possible -- it certainly can't be disproved. Truth of all that detail in the Bible, much of which is inconsistent with morality, reality, and/or itself? Ridiculous.

i think that the contradictions involved in believing andy kaufmann might be divine, especially the way he dealt with his last few months, require more stupidity (and probably drugs) than any other religion that i am aware of, if by only slim margins.
on another note, Raelism makes alot of sense to me, if you strip away all the alien bullshit. (i realize this doesn't leave it with much, but whatever).
<<< Honestly, I don't see how the methods for creating scientology were any different from creating 'Flying Spaghetti Monsterism' >>>
The latter is a joke. The former is a money-making scam.
See the difference?
<<< I would like to thank you all for keeping me humble >>>
I don't know how we can "keep" you humble when you aren't humble at all to start with. As proven by your next sentence:
<<< If it weren't for you guys I would think that I was maybe the hundreth smartest person on Earth. You have proven to me that I am probably at least #5 WAYYYYYYYY above you morons. >>>
Off by seven or eight orders of magnitude there. I doubt you'd make the top 500,000,000.
Although anyone who enters into the Scientology cult is obviously being scammed, it might be kinda cool to be on the receiving end of the cash. I heard that some Scientologists give $200,000 during their lifetimes. Even if most only give a quarter of that, that's $72,000,000 from the people born on today alone! (Assumes that one sucker is born every minute.) However immoral it is, I kinda like L. Ron Hubbard's brute honesty when he said he wanted to start a religion for money.
Oh, right, the Christian (Catholic?) Church is one of the world's wealthiest institutions or something. Where does all the money go?
And Mamacags is technically right, although a hypocrite.
Mamacags may be in the top 25% intelligence range for all living organisms on the planet, but top 8% for humans seems unlikely.
It gets #2 on my dumb religion scale.
#1 still belongs to the fundies of all religious affiliations whether they be Jews, Christians, Muslims, Hindus, or whatever. They seem want to kill people in all sorts of violent ways. The Scientologists will mostly just sue you to oblivion :-)
For the leadership it's certainly a money-making machine.
I suspect the lure of Scientology for many adherants is that it makes people part of a club that is very into a 'you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours' philosophy, like being a Freemason or having gone to the right private school.
It must have some benefits, because it's just so epically moronic that it leaves older religions for dead in the stupid stakes.
The only true religion is Pastafarianism! And, to a lesser extent, the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, even though they are decadent pirates!

...The irony is so thick here. Thetans? Satan and/or demons. Xenu? Satan. Operating Thetans? Believing Xians. Xenu's volcano nukes? Noah's flood.
It's the same shit in a different pile.
Confused?
