I have always taught my kids that we do not belong to a religion, we have a relationship with Christ. They have come home from school and told me about the discussions they have had with friends that asked them what religion they belonged to and they said they didn't, they were in a relationship. They were in awe at the response they got because the others could not grasp what that meant, the other kids even went so far as to try and convince them they were in a religion. My kids never backed down. It is hard not to say that I was proud of them, but I was.

So, you're in a relationship with the non-existent son of a non-existent father. Well, lots of children have imaginary friends. Perhaps, then, some imaginary friends linger on into adulthood.

So, you attribute mystical and magical stuff to your non-existent imaginary friend. Well, I've noticed that many people can be superstitious, even some of them into their adulthood.

So, you're imaginary friend is a superhero with a special interest in protecting you, your kids and your fellow cultists. Well, there's certainly some devilish supervillains in the world today.

Sometimes I can't help but feel that some children have extraordinary bad luck in that they can't choose their parents and are lumbered with total duffers.

Sometimes poor mental health and gullibility are not fully responsible for all of the above. Sometimes poor parenting plays a large part.

I am surprised no one has pointed this out, but in addition to the normal craziness, the poster's apparent reluctance to tell her kids or anyone else when s/he is proud of them is alarming.

On the one hand, the Bible teaches that God is responsible for all creation, and on the other hand we have apologetics telling us that the good comes with the bad. When an omnipotent, 'loving' being willfully allows terrible sorrow in the form of his own creation's entropy to destroy property, lives and spread disharmony, quite simply? That being is either not unconditionally loving, or not all-powerful.

Prayer is on one hand branded as being the be-all and end-all to human misery, that if you pray and you are devout, you receive whatever you need, you are granted all manner of divine favors, and will never want. On the other hand... well, yeah. You have tornadoes ravaging the "most devout" areas, while other contradictory Biblical verses tell you that prayer is useless without action.

This isn't even a matter of having a cake and eating it too; There simply is no cake. What we have is people so bicameral and so delusional as to believe they have a personal relationship with an unseen figment on a profound, reality-bending level. That is not faith, that is schizophrenia in socially acceptable clothing, and it quite simply is not healthy. Whether or not you're offended by the tornado comparison, one little nagging fact remains:

If you really are Christian, your god set that twister free to kill and demolish. This comes after his covenant with man through Noah, to never set his wrath upon humankind again. Irreconcilable, without some truly demented mental gymnastics.

Many of our fundie friends, especially from the Bible Belt, revel over and over again about how natural disasters and sickness are God's punishment for sinful people.

In this respect the destruction in New Orleans by Katrina comes to mind in a very distasteful manner. Many fundies were tripping over each other to proclaim the glory and majesty of God's wrath against a den of iniquity.

The recent disaster in Japan also brought a few of them to front center.

Strangely enough, when a tornado hits "God's own country", it's just a storm with a natural cause. No hand of God, no wrath, no iniquity.

Certainly, not everybody who suffered loss by the recent tornados in the US is a Bible thumping holier-than-thou nutjob, in fact those misanthrops probably comprise only a small percentage of the population in question. Nevertheless, the humor in the cartoon is in the finger pointing back at them and ruthlessly demonstrating the complete and utter nonsense of their own interpretations of what they conceive to be God's will.

You don't want your churches to lose their tax-exempt status, as then it would have to be your pastors' own sheeple - you - to be the ones who have to fully fund your church organisations' activities, nay, very existence? (oh, but you already do, effectively, with your 'tithes') Well, then. Therefore you do belong to a religion, and you're not in a 'relationship with Christ' (Including male fundies among you? And I thought you lot frowned upon homosexuality?! So no hypocrisy there, nosiree!). Mainly because your 'Jesus', nay, your 'God', doesn't exist. Ergo, right-wing fundieism is a religion. QED.

Really? So what are all those prayers that people say during and before a natural disaster for? Just for aesthetics? No, they're praying for protection; from the very storm systems god created. Hell, the central tenet of Christianity is that Jesus paid for our sins and so long as we believe in him/follow his teachings/whatever criteria are followed by a given sect we'll avoid hell (which, again, god created). How is that not like a protection racket?

Anybody who thinks that something personally happening or not happening to them is reason to lose all possibilities of a belief in a higher power is kind of missing the point.

True, but you rarely get anyone who thinks like that. Now, you might get people that SUPPLEMENT their disbelief with "Oh, and by the way even if god exists he's a douche for allowing people to die horribly" but you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone that bases their disbelief entirely on that.

Here in the UK, $cientology isn't officially (certainly legally) recognised as a religion, therefore the Orgs here have to pay tax on their 'donations' (i.e. the payments made by the brainwashed LRHbots, er, I mean 'Pre-Clears', OT-Is - OT-VIIIs, for their 'Auditing' sessions, 'Patter Drills' [talking to walls], making figures out of Plasticine etc; all necessary on their journey on the 'Bridge to Total Freedom'*).

A concept so simple, even a child can understand it:

I've mentioned this in another post, but I used to be a member on RR. I'm ashamed of myself for once believing similarly as these people do.

That being said, I think I can be that much more annoyed by these people since I was "in their home" at one point...it makes it that much more personal, haha.

On topic: instead of these "Christians" constantly saying that they aren't a part of a religion and that they have a "relationship with Jesus," I would love for them to actually do as Jesus commanded...you know, helping the poor, the needy, the afflicted, etc. Instead, though, they support the politicians that would much rather cut funding for social programs and up the defense budget. Isn't that quite the contradiction?

In short: it would be lovely if these people emulated Jesus as a person who wanted to help the needy rather than aide in sucking their pockets dry. It would be fascinating if they attempted to help people rather than just giving money to their church, thinking that they're saving the world by doing so.
