I was happy at first because I thought these men were true disciples of Christ, until I got the bible inside the house and started looking inside and saw the map. It said Map of Palestine at time of Christ. I about had a heart attack. After reading on RR all afternoon about this topic, it's in my hands? Then I look closer and the word Gaza is on it in the corner. What? The worst thing is the men gave these bibles to my neighbors!

How dare the put a map in the bible!

Because there was a map? Drama queen much?

What blasphemy! How dare they include the city of Gaza in a Map of Palestine at time of Christ! I mean Gaza is only one of the oldest cities in the world with a history of habitation dating back 5000 years! What would posses these people to include a city that was actually there on a map of the area?
Can anybody explain to me why these people think a map in the bible is bad?
Seriously, I'm sitting here wondering, and I can't make heads or tails of this.

No, but because it said "map of Palestine " instead of "map of Israel". In Violette's crazy world, that suggests that Christ was born in a Moozlem(sic) country, and that Jesus was a brown A-rab, instead of the white European dude that (s)he is used to seeing in the church.
This is what historical maps do, Violette; they show the names and polities of the time, not those of today. Had there been a map of the whole Roman Empire, it would have showed you the city of Lutetia in Gaul (or Gallia), rather than that of Paris, France. Gaza was a city at that time, so it's on the map. You would have a point about Palestine (or, more accurately, Palaestina) if you knew your history well enough. Palestine was the name of the province ruled by the Romans after 135CE; at the time of Christ, it was known as Judaea. As for the name Israel, the Kingdom had long disappeared and the modern state was nearly 2,000 years away.
A map you say? Better check that Bible carefully. If it has a story in it about the time Jesus went to the city of Tyre to buy a pair of retread sandals, and while there the attendant spit in his eyes, wiped his forehead, gave him a drink of water and an oil change... that Bible is distributed by the heretical Exxonites! Burn it!

Oooo, careful. You might get infected by teh ebil Reality, and we can't be having that now, can we?! The fact that Israel didn't fucking exist until 1947 AD - and until then it was purely Palestine - must've made your pwecious 'Hoenskuled' brainmeats all hurty*. Poor, poor you?! [/hyper-sarcasm]
...and ex-footballer Paul Gascoigne is now a religion ?! o_O;
*- I remember reading in a past thread in RR about (and during ) the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, and one was even offended at the thought of a team from Palestine merely being there.
...but they all but wet themselves when Israel entered the stadium, though.
Gaza is mentioned many times in the Old Testament, going all the way back to Genesis. Its a town a few hundred miles south west of Jerusalem and was part of Canaan. My RSV has maps, too. They're there to help people visualize and locate the ancient places mentioned in the scripture. I can't see what objection she has.
Ah! Yes I see. I deduce that you are now clearly ready to be raptured. Unfortunately, I think you may have prepared yourself too soon. You're just a smidgen too early.
But that's OK. You'll prepare better next time when you can finally get past the drama queen stage and just loll fatalistically in calm acceptance of your own dribbling insanity. Then you'll truly be ready.
such logical brilliance, later in the thread:
"I've got a bible my aunt passed on to my mom when she died, it's from the 80's I believe. It has maps of the Holy land, maps of Roman land that was Jerusalem and such, but no such maps of so-called "Palestine" in the time of Christ... it never existed until the Arabs laid claim... <b>this just goes to show that the time is close at hand.<b/>"
Am I wrong, or do these nutheads just conclude that the endtimes are near from each and every little daily, trivial event?
@1601082: Thanks, the OP wasn't entirely clear whether that map or the names shocked him.
Later in the forum Violette goes on:
"I think I understand now. The land has been called Palestine. I'm sorry. I pray for a better understanding next time."
Or, you could read other books than the Bible... Will these people never learn?
Confused?
