NASA and the moon shots are what brought the former Soviet Union financially/economically to its knees and ultimate collapse. The Soviets simply could not keep up with the strong US economy. The internal structures that you mention are the pillars that support a country and make it strong. By all means cut back, or even cut out entirely, and give the savings in tax cuts for those who should be paying much more to the state. The fibre of a nation is weakened in this way. The two party system in America has outlived its time. It no longer serves the country. Rather it serves the wealthy, then multinationals and the interests of corrupt politicians. There is little accountability in a weakened Congress. It leaves the political framework too open to corruption from within and without.

If you get to take NASA out of the budget because you don't like paying for it, we liberals should be able to cut down the so-called "defense" budget (which is orders of magnitude more expensive) because we don't like having to pay for your imperialist masturbatory fantasies. And socialism occurs when the government takes over an already existing private industry. If there's no private enterprise beforehand, socialism is a logical impossibility.
