“There are many who have been aware of Scripture, and it has often been a guide in our relations with Israel,” said Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX). “’Some of us believe that the Bible is accurate. Certainly, so many prophesies have been fulfilled, and if that is true, this administration, unless they can find a verse that accurately says that those who betray Israel will be blessed, then this country is being dug in a deeper hole by this administration and its betrayals of Israel’s trust and Israel’s friendship.”

Bible: ancient book written by people living in the desert, has no coherent continuity and contradicts itself many times.
Not a good thing to base your foreign policy on
"’Some of us believe that the Bible is accurate. "
Others of us believe the koran is accurate, and it says jews are sons of Satan and Allah will curse those who aid Satan.
Since islam is the real religion it looks like you're screwed, Gomer.
Betraying Israel=not getting on his knees and sucking every Israeli cock and licking every Israeli pussy completely dry. Simply giving them a constant supply of weapons, money, excusing all of their bad behavior, and harassing all of their enemies isn't enough. No, we need to be so far up their ass that we can talk out of their mouth.
And no, I don't hate Israel. But there's a difference between supporting an ally and worshiping the ground they stand on (which is, incidentally, what this is all about).
Meh. Gohmert usually has much crazier stuff than this. As for fulfilled prophecies, the Nile has not run dry, Egypt has not been desolate for 40 years, they have not converted to Judaism, Tyre was not permanently destroyed by either Nebuchadnezzar or Alexander the Great. The former didn't destroy the main city, the latter did but quickly rebuilt it, when Tyre was supposed to be down for either 70 years or forever. Damascus, well, fundies are begging Israel to destroy it even now.
What about Israel betraying America's trust and America's friendship?
What about how Israel treated the American Rachel Corrie?
Israel is a worse apartheid state than South Africa ever was, but few seem to mind. Their treatment of the Palestinians is fairly similar to the treatment of the Native Americans. Is that why you support them?
Some of the "prophecies" were written after the fact, stupid.
If you can find a verse that accurately says anything about the US of A, then we'll talk.
How much do you want to bet that Louie Gobfart here wants to guide foreign policy, with Israel, towards accomplishing Armageddon so he and all the Fundtards can whoosh on up to Heaven... Er, soon ?
There are many who, now that there is a black, Democrat in the White House, who choose to ignore the part of the Bible which says government officials are ordained by God.
"There are many who have been aware of Scripture, and it has often been a guide in our relations with Israel"
Yet, even among Liberal Reform Jews, they don't regard your 'Jesus' as their Messiah.
...but Muslims - even Iran, who want to 'erase Israel from the map' - regard, nay, revere the very same Jewish 'Jesus' as an important prophet (just not the final one, that's all).
Frankly, the paradoxical hole you theologically illiterate * right-wing Fundamental ist Christains are digging for yourselves, couldn't be deeper than the drill on Nero's ship Narada (in the first JJ Abrams "Star Trek" film) could make, Loonie Gomer Pyle.
*- I figured this out when I did RE at school. Praise be the British secular state education I received, where thinking for yourself is encouraged.
Where the Bible is accurate - and it is not a history book - it records events that happened thousands of years ago. Many of the prophecies also refer to events thousands of years ago. The "Israel" mentioned in the Bible is the ancient kingdom of Israel, not the modern state.
And Israel feels so betrayed by this administration that it gave Obama its highest honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
@Sasha
They don't worship Israel. They see it "proof" the Rapture is coming and as the stage for their apocalyptic fantasies. Scratch a fundie and you'll often find an anti-Semite.
Gohmert, you numbskull, the Bible manages to get some of its "prophecies" wrong even when they were written AFTER the facts to which they refer... I wouldn't even trust the Bible as toilet paper.
@pete
I still think that the 1st Amendment should be amended to include specific language stating that any elected official who cites their personal religious beliefs as justification for public policy should be immediately removed from whatever office he/she holds and be forever barred from all other public offices.
Fucking seconded!
Confused?
