Pink Floyd wrote a song about the psychopathic academia cartel. "We don't need no education" is the result of being educated by the psychopathic academic cartel, in defense to protect their own humanity. What human being would submit to one of these psychopaths? Sadly, some do, and become abusers and cheaters themselves, and joining that mafia against humanity's freedom.

How do you yourself defend against the adademia cartel and resist their psycopathy? Do you give in and say you don't need no education? The best way to go about it is to drop any dealings with them, as doing so allows them to prey upon your mind and soul. Educate yourself and practice respect for your own mind and learning, and don't give your mind and soul to anyone else.

That is not what the song is about. Pink Floyd albums were about themes and the song is one in a theme.

The wall refers to the wall Waters built around himself because he wasn't in touch with reality. The bricks in the wall were the events in his life which propelled him to build this proverbial wall around him. His school teacher was another brick in the wall."

Primary and secondary education isn't usually referred to as "academia", though. The latter is usually referring to university-level education, a favorite talking point of the right wing. And hell, if you think the current primary and secondary education system is bad, wait until the teachers lose what little influence they have left to the fundies and corporate types who have been taking over for years. The fundies want schooling to be a matter of rote memorization and training in absolute obedience to authority figures; the corporations getting involved want schools to produce good little workers who, again, refrain from questioning authority. Both of these groups of "innovators" (who, of course, push for "accountability" in the forms of tests which stress rote memorization and are intended to push critical-thought-based education out of the classroom) sound like the type of people described by Annabelle's rant -- but they're completely contrary to the motives of people who are actually involved with education for the sake of education. The people Annabelle's attacking here are the people who are pushing for education to be less authoritarian and conformist and more human.

The last sentence, 'Educate yourself and practice respect for your own mind and learning, and don't give your mind and soul to anyone else' is a noble enough sentiment in itself.

The rest of it is fallacious drivel, indicating to one and all, that you prefer to take a dishonest approach to the subject of education rather than face-up to the challenges of a failing system.

Educational standards do fall woefully short of the mark in your country and mine but not for the ridiculous reasons that you propound. Academia is hardly the roiling den of psychopathy and inhumanity that you picture, being largely a gentle and ineffective social institution that needs more imagination and dynamism. It needs less interference from those that would promote their points of view at the expense of educational standards. And it needs stronger and more rigorous standards.

Oh! It's from CARM. That would explain the level of stupidity.

Sadly, many in the world of academics don't get into the profession to help people but to cheat people. They rob people of their humanity, their ability to think for themselves, their ability to question, and the like.
I went through university and it was the shallow, christian- by- default business students that were learning mainly business knowledge and using knowledge as a weapon, or at least an edge to get somewhere in the world. Now, I fully admit that even the abstract academia (which I vaguely consider myself part of) has a streak of self-interest. Knowledge is a power, and power can always be used for good or bad (unless it's like some cursed ring or monkey paw or something.) But it wasn't the literature or philosophy students, or certainly the serious scientists, that practiced law-of-the-jungle philosophy, not that I personally observed. It was the young conservative yuppies.

And more or less, that's what that Pink Floyd song is about. Not that education itself is bad, but that schools provide not only education but also mind control, and lots of it. It was aimed more at grammar schools than university, and I think a lot of the attitudes towards life displayed by these young fogies were probably set by the time they were 8 years old.

I agree with this very much! What you do with yourself, with your mind, with your life, is your responsibility. Don't trust any external source (especially one that draws money and has self-interests) with your education. University and formalization may be absolutely useful, and in fact it usually prevents blatant fundyism, but all it is, is technique which gives you the tools to do what you actually want to do.

It's not a VERY fundy post is it? Maybe with government funds it could be developed.

You have clearly not understood the meaning behind the album The Wall, dearie.

The next song on the album, Mother, sounds very much like a fundie mother, intent on keeping her baby ignorant and away from reality.

Fun fact: my dad, a university teacher, used these two songs (and others) when putting his youngest son to sleep. He held him in his arms, and danced and sang with Roger Waters. My brother is one of the most warmhearted, intelligent and critical thinking people I know.
