[On Phil Robertson being suspended from Duck Dynasty.]
It didn't take A&E long to cave, did it? I fired off emails yesterday and today to them, not that it'll do any good. I'm sure A&E is thinking if they wait long enough that Phil will give in and apologize. I don't believe Phil is going to do that because from what I've seen of him he's a man of godly moral principles that mean more to him than some TV show. I posted about this on FB just a few minutes ago, in favor of God, the bible, and Phil, of course, and I'm fully expecting at least one of my so-called "friends" to delete me. He's actually an in-law who professes to being an atheist and is a sodomite himself. I only friended him because my FB page is one big witness for Jesus with bible verses and the plan of salvation on it and I hoped he might get convicted and saved because of it. Oh well, it's all in God's hands.

There it is in a nutshell; it's about being part of the in-group and exclusion - "I only friended him because my FB page is one big witness for Jesus..." In other words, I'm not REALLY friends with the icky gay atheist, I'm just such a great Christian that I'm witnessing to him, so I avoid association with him while scoring points in my in-group. Meanwhile caring about actual people is totally not on her radar.
I honestly don't care what anyone says or thinks about queerfolk unless they are in a position to pass legislation related to us (or in a position to unduly influence such legislation). And this simple-minded buffoon isn't, trust me.
However, the ~free market~ apparently does care and has spoken. Sucks to be you.
I love it when a PR campaign to extend life for a dumb reality show works. Been done before for celebs and other shows, but this guy Robertson was really good and pulled it off superbly.
Check out the timing and the sequence of events, if you think I'm mistaken. I used to plan and execute these sort of things for a living.
Yes, that's exactly how converts are made. "Well, I wasn't sure what religion I should be, but these bible verses on TimeWarpWife's facebook page have completely convinced me! I'm going to give my heart to Jesus and give 10% of my income to a Southern Baptist church for the rest of my life starting right now! "
Let's see, DADT and DOMA are now rotting in the dustbin of history. 18 states and the District of Columbia now have marriage equality on the books. Challenges to anti-equality laws exist in most of the remaining states. As the opponents of marriage equality have yet to think up a single, legally solid reason to support their position, we can expect to see marriage equality come to more states (one way or another) in the coming year. The states that already uphold marriage equality will continue to do so because the lack of solid legal grounding for the opponents of marriage equality will render their challenges ineffectual. Two states have outlawed the inflection of bogus treatments to "cure" being gay on minors, and more are considering it. An increasing number of republican leaders are sensing the way the wind is blowing and gingerly pulling back from the issue.
But hey, the opponents of marriage equality did win on the all-important Duck Dynasty issue. Clearly its an even match.
If this was a publicity stunt, it worked very well! No-one here in Europe knew that Duck Dynasty existed prior to the bigoted statement. Now quite a few of us know. What we're going to do with that knowledge, I don't know though. Probably nothing; we'll soon forget it again. Some have gotten their preconception that "all Americans are uneducated bigoted rednecks" sort of confirmed.
Yes, I'm sure God is real concerned about what happens in your in-law's bedroom, or some mouthy celebutard's fate, for that matter. If Archie Bunker and ZZ Top had a retarded baby....
@pyro
Truth be told, it makes sense. The whole point I have been told of Duck Dynasty is these guys are, as well as been good-old-boy rednecks, generally pretty business savvy. I'm hard pressed to find any other reason why he'd think such comments would fly in the public forum. On top of that, A&E turfed, and then regathered him in record time on both ends, while happily announcing another season of DD. If it wasn't planned, I'd eat my hat.
I'm pretty sure that his naked, Jim Crow, racism had at least as much to do with being punished as his homophobia. Here in the cause and effect universe inhabited by sane people; it's good business practice for a network that wants a wide audience to view xenophobia in a negative light.
I like how this self-righteous ass does mean and meaningless shit and then trots out the old, "it's in God's hands!" line... Way to actually care about others. Why even bother to be a concern troll if it's all in god's blood stained fingers, anyhow?
I love the comment from someone who apparently e-mailed A&E about "graveling" at the feet of "PC police" and them queers. I feel bad for whoever has to read the shit these bigoted idiots blather on about. If they took two seconds to listen to themselves maybe they'd grasp how disgusting and delusional they sound.
This entire thing was just an publicity stunt by A&E.
Tell me, what else does A&E has?
This whole thing happens right before Christmas, and ends right after?
Sounds like a perfect ploy to sell a bunch of Duck Dynasty crap.
Vanellope von Schweetz: "Hey; are you a homophobe?"
Phil Robertson: "No! I'm not a homophobe!! But I am busy! So you just..go on home!!!"
Vanellope: "What's that? Didn't hear ya! Your breath is so bad it made my ears numb!"
@Swede : Hey, some of us knew and hated Duck Dynasty before the redneck predictably turned out to be a hateful bigot - though, I mostly knew it from scrolling by it while getting television that doesn't fry your brain.
@Tina: Well, half of America went apeshit over what was said, the other half went apeshit over the suspension. Anyway, what we got proof for once again is that America is weird and probably likes going apeshit.
"...because my FB page is one big witness for Jesus with bible verses and the plan of salvation on it..."
I often find that I'm sort of placed in the position of a juror, in that I have to weigh the evidence of witnesses. I do that by classifying them, among other things, as being either compulsive lying fantasists or sane realists.
"Oh well, it's all in God's hands."
Exactly. So why worry? It won't matter to you er...soon. Am I right in assuming you're one of the special people?
I'm sure that so-called "friend" deleted you a long time ago, Timey, or at least set FB to not show your posts.
Duck Dynasty had a huhwhatnow? I'm American and I didn't hear till now. Ahh, one of those little nice things about living in Europe: I can miss stupid crap like that!
I fired off emails yesterday and today to them, not that it'll do any good ... Oh well, it's all in God's hands.
You got it backwards. It's "Oh well, it's all in God's hands ... not that it'll do any good"
Turns out Phil has a wide variety of beliefs, some that might make you puke:
"...some Americans could also be shocked to find out that Robertson believes that the age of 15 is the perfect time for girls to get married -- as long as they can cook and carry a Bible.
At a Sportsmen's Ministry talk in 2009, Robertson had some advice for a young man. "Make sure that she can cook a meal, you need to eat some meals that she cooks, check that out," he said. "Make sure she carries her Bible. That'll save you a lot of trouble down the road. And if she picks your ducks, now, that's a woman."
"They got to where they're getting hard to find," Robertson remarked. "Mainly because these boys are waiting until they get to be about 20 years old before they marry 'em. Look, you wait until they get to be 20 years old, the only picking that's going to take place is your pocket."
The Duck Commander company founder added: "You got to marry these girls when they are about 15 or 16, they'll pick your ducks. You need to check with mom and dad about that of course." He went on to say that the Bible gave Americans the right to hunt. And Robertson practices what he preaches. He began dating his wife, Kay, when she was only 14 and he was 18. They waited until Kay was 16 to get married."
"from what I've seen of him he's a man of godly moral principles that mean more to him than some TV show"
Well then he's more than free to live by his 'principles' and go back to his life as a broke-ass redneck.
To fundies, Freedom of Speech means the right to slander and bash gay folks, but it doesn't apply to country singers who state they aren't proud the president governed their state. Only fundies have a right to say what they want. This "right" doesn't apply to anyone else.
I only friended him because my FB page is one big witness for Jesus with bible verses and the plan of salvation on it and I hoped he might get convicted and saved because of it.
Not if you can only speak in Christianese.
It sure did not! I mean they still play old reruns of Duck Dynasty as well as after the whole Josh Duggar fiasco they still play shows for the Duggar family and Quiverfull. If only someone had stood up to the bullying Christians.
And you call Robertson a man of godly moral principals? He wants to force girls into marriage not unlike how Daesh does. Similar views to homosexuals too. Still want to say he is godly and moral?
Your in law is a sodomite? He does not show hospitality as per Ezekiel?
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
