(In response to someone asking whether or not George W. bush is a true Christian...)
A politician, any politician, unfortunately can't proselytize for Christ and have a chance of getting elected in our secular society.

Yet many politicians do and get elected. In fact, it seems that if a politician didn't in the very least make the statement that they're a god fearing man, they tend not[/] get elected to office. More to the point, admitting to being an atheist in the country is political suicide for most people. So do tell me again Stevo how proselytizing for your god isn't winning elections.
To be fair to Steve here, in a national election that isn't a safe seat for Congress in a gerrymandered Lovecraftian geometrically shaped district, the Religious Right is becoming a liability in elections. And long may it continue.

Hey, moron! News flash! Most politicians don't get elected UNLESS they're Protestant Christians!
@tfaddict, The Shattered Glass Universe of course :P
Addressing the actual topic, wouldn't you have to elected to any post to be considered a politician?
“Yes, the long war on Christianity. I pray that one day we may live in an America where Christians can worship freely! In broad daylight! Openly wearing the symbols of their religion... perhaps around their necks? And maybe -- dare I dream it? -- maybe one day there can be an openly Christian President. Or, perhaps, 43 of them. Consecutively.”

That is how it should be. In fact, it should be no burden for a politician to declare their atheism, but in certain parts of the world it is. There aren't many countries where being a theist is a hindrance, and where it has been disbelief isn't the primary motive. A fanatical political ideology, with some resemblances to religious extremism (with regards to a desire to censor and control) is the reason for that.
Well,,, a full on righter fundamentalist like Huckabee or Santorum won't make it to President because, holy fuckin' stupid shit being spewed.
But they do make it in State elections and are for some reason, actually only their religious nonsense, are respected in some other states.
Now in the national level one must become less Apocalyptic, and talk about real shit once in awhile, hence W sorta being elected twice for all you know.
There's this really serious issue underlying here though. Romney was a Mormon, he avoided talking about it except in White Horse circle, but it wasn't a secret that he was a dedicated practicing disciple in the most likely Christian sect to be demonized and ridiculed as heretical and retarded.
He lost by only 5 million votes. That's closer than many.
Be afraid, there's simply people in America purposely voting for the candidates that will destroy everything.
How did Mike Fuckabee get elected twice, then?
@Canadiest
And Santorum lost by a margin of 18% in a Senate election in 2006.
Americans (who are not idiots) will immediately know that what this guy said is the opposite of the truth. For those of you from other countries, who may not be aware of how frequently we elect pious idiots who are openly theocratic to state and national office, look up the following:
James Inhofe
Sam Brownback
Mike Huckabee
Michelle Bachmann (yes, she is real, and was actually elected)
Confused?
