Your religion didn't even have a marriage ceremony until the middle ages. Prior to that, priests attended simply to bless the union, not officiate and certainly not to sanctify it.
Also, if you'll look to your precious Wholly Babble you'll see that marriage was nothing like what you believe it to be. Marriages to multiple women, acceptance of the keeping of concubines and so on were all well and good back then.
