[Disney has announced that Tangled is the last fairy tale film for a while...]
The biggest reason cited for this change is that girls no longer view princesses and getting married to be the ideal.
“By the time they’re 5 or 6, they’re not interested in being princesses,” said Dafna Lemish, chairman of the Radio and TV Dept. at Southern Illinois University and a self-proclaimed expert in the role of media in children’s lives. “They’re interested in being hot, in being cool. Clearly, they see this is what society values.”
This is also what happens when Christians forget biblical truth and let Neo-Marxist, radical ideologies like cultural feminism run the mass media and change Western Civilization’s traditional Christian, biblical values such as purity, modesty and monogamous marriage.

Uh...that last sentence was a doozy. Felt like it came out of nowhere. Granted, this is MovieGuide, so I expect that a bit, but geez.
marriage is not a christian value, it started with egyptian pagans, not every female can be a princess, also society values equal rights for all, which is clearly being spurned by idiots.
"This is also what happens when Christians forget biblical truth and let Neo-Marxist, radical ideologies like cultural feminism run the mass media and change Western Civilization’s traditional Christian, biblical values such as purity, modesty and monogamous marriage."
Purity? Modesty? Monogamous marriage ? From Christians ?
Surely you're joking.
Since there are very, very few princesses in the world, and there are only two ways of becoming one (being born as one or marrying a prince), it's hardly a valid dream job option. There are probably more women brain surgeons in this world, than there are princesses.
Does the Bible say that all girls shall grow up to become princesses? I must have missed those verses...
Hey Mr. MovieGuide, the traditional 1950's-TV view of America never really existed, and is not likely to ever happen. So either get over it, or continue to live in your unhappy world bemoaning the evil you see everywhere.
I'm 52, grew up with Disney.
It's because they've covered all the Grimms and Mother Goose fairy tales in one way or another. The stories were retold over 40 years ago in cartoons either as plot devices or tradionally retold.
This weird agenda you imply is less likely. As for the basic princess driven storyline, you're full of it, must be a dozen modern movies with no fairy tales equivelant that are still about a princess.
How far will you people go to be upset about things that aren't happening and wouldn't be terrible if they did?
"“By the time they’re 5 or 6, they’re not interested in being princesses,”"
Better they find out early on, all by themselves that that's not a viable career option.
I don't want women to be princesses either.
Then boys are grown to believe that they are, and get shocked when they realize that females are only human too.
That's not even true; Pixar's 2012 film, Brave, is an (original) fairy tale, and the female lead, Merida, will join the Disney Princess line-up.
And the Disney Princess merchandise profits rival the GDP of some countries. It's a billion-dollar industry; I'm pretty sure little girls still like princesses just fine. The only thing feminism has changed is that the more modern princesses tend to be more pro-active and worthy of being role models; this is a Good Thing.

Like Solomon's wives, the concubine of the Levites, etc.
My five-year-old cousin won't be abandoning her princess fixation anytime soon.
Also, the "no more fairy tales" thing? Not actually true. Which is good, because Tangled was excellent.
Traditional marriage: where pure, chaste 13-year-olds are married off to 40-year-old men who already have several wives.
Biblical marriage: 300 wives, 700 concubines
- or maybe they read their junior versions of the Bible. Princesses and queens generally caught hell, didn't they? Sheba was lucky to get out alive!
Just face it. Christians have a boner for aristocracy, no matter how benighted the ruler is.
Now that's a bit of an overreaction, don't you think? Considering the shift was made entirely on capitalistic grounds, and capitalism is usually considered an important part of Western civilization (even if some socialists, such as yours truly, wish it weren't so).
> Neo-Marxist
I propose we start using this as some sort of a shibboleth thingy. You see, no one speaks of Marxism as a political ideology these days (well, perhaps the actual Marxists do, but that's a pretty big and obvious exception). Therefore, we can safely assume that if someone uses the word "Marxist" or, heavens forbid, "Neo-Marxist", while foaming about something completely unrelated to politics per se, we can safely assume the speaker is out of their frigging mind.
"Neo-Marxist" is particularly damning. The meaning of this word that I've inferred from the fundie comments is essentially "just like old Marxism, except with absolutely none of the traits of Marxism and all traits of <evil du jour>", e.g. feminism.
> cultural
Another word they've been using pretty damn commonly. I don't think it means what they think it means. For instance, what the hell is "cultural feminism"? Aren't social movements inherenly "cultural"? Or is that "cultural" feminism as in contrast to feminism that has nothing to do with "culture"?
Please. The princesses in Disney aren't the good little baby factories you and your zealot friends like. Jasmine made her tiger bite the suitors she didn't like, Ariel constantly went to the surface despite her father's wishes against it, Belle liked reading even when the rest of the people thought women shouldn't, Mulan dressed like a man and entered the army.
And in this movie, Rapunzel didn't obey her (fake) mother and proved he could be equal to her love interest.
Yeah man, it's so RADICAL to teach children that they don't actually have to get married [/sarcasm].
Also, you can't be cool and hot at the same time! Make up your mind! : )
You mean girls are now growing up with more realistic expectations? No, please, anything but that! Only a Neo-Marxist, radical ideologue would want that.

BUZZWORD BINGO!!!
The biggest reason cited for this change is that girls no longer view princesses and getting married to be the ideal.
Sounds like a good thing to me. Go progress! Also, wanting equality is not radical.
Actually its because Disney have run out of "princess movies". Also we find the idea that being simply better than people depending on who you were born to an abhorrent idea.
Seriously.
1. Beauty and the Beast
2. Princess Diaries
3. Snow White
4. Aladdin
5. Princess and the Frog
6. Sleeping Beauty
7. Rumplestiltskin (AKA Tangled)
8, Little Mermaid
9. Cinderella
10. Mulan
11. Pocahontas
Seriously they have done all of these. They are "OUT OF STORIES". In order to sell these fairy tales they have to be well known. Not something random that no one knows off.
I think BOTH parties are wrong here. Disney for axing the princess line (they don't need to eliminate princesses, just make the movies and lines not-inane), Movie Guide for making a culture war out of it.
"Girls, be a drudge for Jesus. It's what God wants."
I can't possibly imagine why that kind of recruitment talk fails so miserably.
As for me, I'm looking for a compromise between fawning biblical babyslave and prissy, know it all "hmph, I can get along just fine without a man" types.
As if having to acknowledge men is the worst thing to ever have happen to a woman.
@WWWWolf
Given that someone recently told me that "Feminism is just Marxism with the word 'class' stricken out and the word 'sex' written in in crayon", while trying to argue that a definition of a word that was used commonly in everyday speech, in academic circles and the social sciences, and that appeared in the OED was completely wrong, everyone who used it was wrong, and he was right...
I am very much inclined to agree.
Yes, those good old days when people were judged on merit of how good a person they were... those good old days that never existed... how I miss them.
Fairy tale princess = Good-looking, wealthy, born into the highest class of society, loved by many. THAT'S why fairy tales were so popular with girls. Wanting to be a princess back then was the equivalent of wanting to be a famous movie actress nowadays. We've merely traded the tiara for a Gucci purse.
Maybe it's because Disney may want to avoid a potential, revenue sapping clash, with other fairy tale movies, due to come out in the near future...
One potential "Clashee", for example, is the Schrek "Prequel", Puss In Boots, which deals with the swashbuckling moggie, voiced by Antonio Bandearas...

Well, there's always anime:
"Princess Tutu"
"Petit Princess Yucie"
"Princess Mononoke"
"Princess Nine"
And even...:
"Princess Princess"
"Princess Lover" (the 2-part OVA)
From the almost completely un -Christian, mainly Shinto & Zen Buddhist Japan. To date untainted by the disease of Christian 'sin' & 'guilt'.
>:D
Hey Anon-e-moose you forgot the Ojamajo Doremi series, Princess Resurrection, and Petite Princess Yucie.
By the way In The Princess Tutu Manga. Princess Kraehe looks like this

*Mind has gone into the Otaku Gutter and is not coming out of it*
So if a self-proclaimed "expert" says it, that settles it, we're supposed to believe it? I can see how he'd swallow the bible, but his opinions mean nothing beyond that.
Historically, and to some extent still so today, being a princess has never been much more than than a glorified helpmeet role for a small class of wealthy women.
*puts on Hat of Animation Knowledge*
Fundies seem to think Disney cares about what they think. It's such a big company that it can afford to lose some wingnuts, especially if the retool (that probably is not as drastic as rumored) brings in a different customer base. Specifically, boys; Disney is at a point where they absolutely NEED to establish that they can make movies boys as well as girls will like, especially since Dreamworks has already established that, possibly starting with The Road to El Dorado but continuing with Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon, and Megamind. Which isn't to say there weren't boys who liked Tangled, or The Princess and the Frog, but the marketing was pretty much "this is a girl movie". I don't think it's a coincidence that Treasure Planet and Atlantis bombed; it didn't matter how much cool sci-fi junk was in the trailers, Disney wasn't associated with anything but princess fairy tales for a lot of possible audience members. (Even The Emperor's New Groove didn't do as well as a lot of other Disney movies.) It's sort of a catch-22; if they make a fairytale, only girls will see it, but if they make anything else, STILL only girls and established Disney fans will see it, because everyone else thinks "DISNEY can't do THAT concept right" or "Meh, there'll be a princess in it anyway.")
Basically, this guy is mistaking a savvy business decision still very much rooted in gender roles for a feminist statement. But because Disney is such a bloated octopus of a company, it's almost cute that he thinks his whining will have any effect.
It's better if girls don't see themselves as princesses. It's been said that the prom and marriage industries feed off the pricess image that many young women have, and they got from 1950's-era Disney movies (and trashy romance novels). If we could kill the princess, we'd kill the bridal-industrial-complex.
@ Moondog: I have to admit, I wouldn't weep to see the bridal industry take a good hit. There comes a point where it's too much. Prom? Well, I never went to mine, so I can't say much.

Have any of these fundies even read the bible?
"Purity, modesty and monogamous marriage"
That only applied to women. Men on the other hand could have multiple wives (into the hundreds) and mistresses.
...there were girls who wanted to be princesses when they were little? I don't know about you, but I kind of wanted to be a dinosaur.
That aside, Tangled being the last fairy tale movie has nothing to do with them "turning away from Christian values" or some shit like that. They're just making what appeals to the kids.
This is also what happens when Christians forget biblical truth and let Neo-Marxist, radical ideologies like cultural feminism run the mass media
Feminism isn't neo-Marxist; hell, feminism insisted on some of the contemporary socialist movement's most important trends away from orthodox Marxism. Sorry, but if you're going to divide up ideologies based on feminist status -- Marx was closer to the patriarchal than the feminist side, though he and Engels at least made a modicum of progress towards accepting a change.
Confused?
