Lawmakers in Mississippi have proposed making the Bible the official state book.
Ambulance Chaser:
How does this NOT violate the Establishment Clause? It basically fails ALL THREE parts of Lemon v. Kurtzman, and a state action only has to violate one to be in violation.
afchief:
How does this not support the "Free exercise clause"?????

Because it's an endorsement of a religion not everyone else follows. Unless you're for allowing the Egyptian Book of the Dead as state book, you're infringing on my free exercise. If you choose not to allow you failed free exercise and first amendment and equality. If you choose to, you have to then allow all. Thus you pass free exercise but fail at first amendment

atheist: "So it would be OK if any state made the Koran the official state book?"
afchief: "HOW STUPID CAN ATHEISTS GET?????????? The free exercise clause is about free exercise of *CHRISTIANITY*!!!!!!!!"
Then what was the point of the War of Independence against the forces of King George III: head of the Protestant Church of England?
Do you want a state religion, or don't you? Make your fucking minds up. After all: not exactly seeing the words 'God', 'Jesus', 'Creator' or 'Marriage' appearing anywhere in the US Constitution, o 'New Judge to replace Scalia' afchuff ...?!
Because of couuuuuurse you know more about US law than even the SCOTUS. Don't you...?!
Afchief, I'm disappointed in you. The correct answer, of course, is 'Lemon v. Kurtzman is only an "opinion"!!!!!!!!!'
Amendment I
Guarantee against establishment of religion
This provision has been incorporated against the states. See Everson v. Board of Education, 330 U.S. 1 (1947)
Dodging the (very valid) question, I see. Or else in afchief's warped mind, "free exercise" of religion means allowing religious people do do whatever the hell they want, including trampling on the rights of the non-religious. And by "religious" in this case, I mean "Christians."

Unfortunately, many of them believe just that.

The point of the Bill of Rights was to guarantee the freedoms of citizens, and to limit the abuse of government.
The government cannot have a religion.
It doesn’t have a right to free exercise of a religion.
And the people making up a government can pray to whoever they want to, they cannot make me pray to whoever they want to.
Confused?
