Word redefining? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhahahahahaah!!!!!!
That's what you morons are doing. A Republic is almost the opposite of a democracy, dumbass! If you friggin' idiots want to quote Plato, the least you could do is read it! The whole point of Plato's 'Republic' is to do away with democracy [people are too stupid and uninformed to make good political decisions, as you have just proven]and hire professional politicians and legislators, sound familiar?
Dumbass.

Republic appears, as a matter of fact, in many different civilisations, including Rome or the XVIII century Europe. We can pick and choose.
Let me also add that while democracies and republics are differing forms of government, they are about as far from opposites as can be. They are different methods of working toward government in the interest of the people, giving the citizens oversight over the ruling of their nation.

If they administered IQ tests before allowing people to register for the vote, the vast majority of Republican supporters would lose their rights to a ballot.
Not that it would be a bad thing...
Does he even know that a "Republic" is just a form of representational democracy? It's true that in his "Republic," Plato advocated an elitist form of repubic, but that was Plato. Frankly, when it came to other people, Plato was kind of an arrogant dick. Brilliant, yes, but he believed that most people are stupid and clueless and government should be left to smarter representatives.
But Plato didn't invent the idea of democracy or even the idea of a republic, that was just his take on it.
Plato's Republic was an allegory written about politics many thousands of years ago. It's a philosophical piece, not necessarily with much bearing on modern politics, except in the case of thought experiments, etc.
Democracy, all the people voting on what laws are passed.
Republic, designated officals voting to decide what happens.
Democratic republic, officals designated by all the people vote to decide what happens.
It's just the method of getting to the decision more so than opposites. You could have a democratic monarchy if you wanted to, you'd just have to live with one ruler till they died more or less, then vote a new one in.
Ok then
First off: Billy Bob, a republic is simply another form of Representative Democracy .
Second, Representative Democracy is not true democracy. As has been seen in recent (and not so recent) history even the most altruistically founded RepDem (no way in hell am i typing the whole thing out anymore) quickly degenerates into Oligarchy (rule by the few). A true Democracy is one in which any citizen can hope to gain high political office through selection by the people; few countries offer realistic hope of public office to those without several million dollars (or any other currency) in the bank, or rich contributors buying favours with monetary support.
Yes the United States is a republic which in it's simplest form just entails not being a monarchy. that in no way makes it a democracy in the truest sense of the word: rule by the people. more like rule by the richest, slimiest, and least honest people that a countries ignorant proletariat can be tricked into voting for.
If a Republic is almost the opposite of a democracy than butter is almost the opposite of lard.
...or BillyBob's the opposite of an intelligent life-form.
Um, Plato's ideal form of government is what we would today call an aristocracy. And (much like today's Republican party) its organization would be happy to exploit people named "Billy Bob", but they would be SOL if they wanted any active role in government. Enjoy that promised tax cut that only applied to people richer than you.
Confused?
