Pretty simple really, any group with churches, dogma, fundies, common beliefs, creeds, tax exemption, self proclaimed evangelists, US Court sanction, etc is a religion.

I say we start an Atheist Church just for shits and giggles (and tax exemption).
Hell, if it worked for L.Ron Hubbard, it can work for us too
Churches? No.
Dogma? Well, some are dogmatic about what they think, but that doesn't make it dogma.
Fundies? Well, some atheists have gotten quoted here, sure.
Common beliefs? Well, not really. Even their non-belief in God varies from atheist to atheist.
Creed? No, lol.
Tax Exemption? Even if they WERE organized, I don't think they'd get tax exemption...
Self-Proclaimed Evangelists? Well, if they're self-proclaimed, you got me there. They can be quite annoying, too.
U.S. Court Sanction? Not touching this one 'cause I don't understand it.

I think I'll start up a Church of Atheist Secular Humanism. Get myself on TV and raise enough money (tax free) for an all-nude water slide, using beer instead of water.
I imagine there'll be more Christians showing up at the water slide than atheists.

I agree. Atheists should seek to register the Church of FSM so we can all enjoy faith based privileges like tax exemption, private jets, mansions, limousines.........
We may want to make a distinction here.
Let's not pretend that there isn't something like an atheist culture, with its own assumptions and sacred cows and tropes and whatnot. Let's not take offense when someone thinks that atheism is another religion, it can look like that if you haven't been looking very long. Rather, we should try distinguish what atheism is in terms of theism from the atheist subculture in the English-speaking world.
This is a leeetle off topic, but it merits saying.
Atheists are here because it's a free country and we can believe (or not believe) what we want.
And if we're a religion, then where's our tax exemption? I sure could use the extra cash right now.
