I read this entire thread. My wife is on FB and my 4 adult sons are on FB. I've told them countless times that FB is evil and they won't listen to me. After reading through this my opinion that FB is evil has not changed one bit. People say things there that they would never say face to face. If it's worth saying, say it to someone's face. And if someone is worth being a friend, you should be a friend "closer than a brother" and not some silly, cyber friend. FB is evil and nothing good can come from being on it.

I recently had the fortunate experience of being enlightened (or educated) as to what evil Facebook is currently conspiring to unleash upon the world. I would now like to share that experience with you. In the first place, what I find frightening is that some academics actually believe Facebook's line that newspapers should report only on items it agrees with. In this case, "academics" refers to a stratum of the residual intelligentsia surviving the recession of its demotic base, not to those seekers of truth who understand that if Facebook had two brain cells to rub together, it'd realize that while it manufactures crises over faddism, Facebook's claque has been abrogating some of our most fundamental freedoms. Surprisingly, Facebook claims to favor the teaching of critical thinking in schools. You should beware of such claims from it, though. To Facebook, "critical thinking" is a code word for "correct" thinking where "correct" means "pro-Titoism". In my opinion, it would be better for students to learn that Facebook has not increased our safety, security, or happiness by nourishing sticky-fingered, pusillanimous ideologies. All it's increased by doing that is the girth of its bloated ego.

While I've had a few choice words about FB myself, I can't deny it's gotten me back in touch with many friends and family I never thought I'd hear from again. I moved several times as a teen and have a large extended family that's scattered around the world. Most of the talk is trivial chatter of course, but I have been able to share in the joys and pains of some of my old friends that I would otherwise have never known about. I'd say that's a little bit of good that's come from it.

I don't "collect" friends like some people I know do, I only accept you if you're related to me or we went to school together. Much like in real life, who you choose for your friends can make all the difference in what kind of an FB experience you have.

Facebook is just a technology. Nothing evil about it, it's simply a stage of progression that communication is going through. snailmail, telegram, telephone, internet , internet chat rooms, IRC and so on and so forth. Skype is the next step and there will likely be others

No good can come from it? I am part of a gaming club, Tabletop, pen and paper, they have a facebook page, which is useful for keeping everyone up to date on what games are running. A small thing and not unique to facebook but still useful.

Are there problems with Facebook and things like it? Most certainly, privacy issues and dissemination of personal information being one of the worst, but personally I think it's utility could outweight it's flaws.

Yes. I agree. I was on it once, but I got rid of it, and I'd never go back. I see no point in being on it or having anything to do with it. And my account was hacked at least once.

All the friends I had on it were people I actually knew before I joined it... people I could at least call friends in the traditional sense. Without the use of Facebook I could still contact all these people. I don't see any way my life would be easier if I was on Facebook.

If you find it useful, fine, but remember the security risks. And don't get emotionally blackmailed into paying money to send people silly "gifts" which amount to nothing more than gif images!

OK, rant over (and even if you don't agree... at least I only used the standard font size).

FB isn't evil. It's not stupid, either. It's the people on FB who tend to be stupid - and despite what Jacobin seems to think, FB didn't make them that way.
A portion of the population has always been mindless gits. The internet, and social media sites in particular, just make their idiocy more accessible to the rest of us.

Anyone who thinks FB "destroys social interaction" or is somehow bad because it doesn't promote face-to-face conversation needs to check their argument. First of all, not all of us are within convenient travel distance of our friends & family. For example, my friends (and I only mean people I've met in person, mind you) are scattered across the world, some in places like China & Australia. Many of them don't have microphones, or are in much different timezones, or otherwise have obstacles preventing them from being able to chat with me via phone/Skype/instant messenger.
If it weren't for FB & Google+ (more the latter than the former), we wouldn't be able to keep in touch.

Some of you may not find FB useful, and you may not like it. But it is not a bad thing in & of itself; it's just the uses others have put it to that makes it seem like a bad thing.

Facebook is a place where you can meet your real-life friends who live far away from you. Of my fifty-odd friends, there is on about 3 that I have not met in real life. My family lives 250 to 300 kilometers away from me, and I love to see what they are doing with themselves on a regular basis. My mother and father are two of my best friends on Facebook, and I try not to say anything on there that I don't want them to read. Both my brothers, my sister and my brother-in-law are also my friends on Facebook. The only ones "closer than a brother" on Facebook (and in real life) are my mother and my husband.

As always with fundies: It doesn't have to be either/or, it can be both at the same time, dumb-asses!

Oh really, well then what is stopping those "mindless gits" from infesting this site as they have the Facebook? I mean you don't even have to register to post here like all those so-called "social" websites.

Facebook didn't make them stupid (duh), but it deliberately provides an environment fertile for such stupidity. It is a business after all and is there to make money. And every businessperson worth his/her salt knows, the bigger your targeted demographic, the bigger your profits.

So in conclusion, Facebook was tailor-made to cater primarily to the mindless masses, exploiting their stupidity to make sure that they spend as much time on Facebook as possible. It is, hence, such exploitation, such making of profits at the cost of a massive negative social impact worldwide, which makes it evil.

How, exactly, is Facebook tailored to cater to the mindless masses? There were a few people on my friends' list that did idiotic things, and they were just as idiotic in person (or on XBOX live, or on forums). You delete those people, and your Facebook becomes flawless.

Shockingly enough, a number of people have a Facebook on this site. A reason most of them aren't mindless gits is probably because they came here to laugh at fundie quotes, and you need a certain amount of intelligence for that.

The only way Facebook can be stupid and useless is if you have stupid and useless friends/family on your Facebook. There's no other way to enjoy Facebook, in my opinion, unless there are other people.

I don't have a FB account. I've been dubious about it ever since I first heard of it. However cousin V who has recently returned to Australia from the USA and Sweden where she taught in universities for years has one which she uses to keep track of the extended family and a few students.

I mentioned this to long time friend DS who recently retired from a long career in banking computer security. He's not the conspiracy type and certainly not religious. But he nearly went ballistic and chewed my ear for ten minutes on the phone about invasion of privacy and loopholes in the site where hackers can get in and do just about anything they want.

rks7777 may be overstating things "evil" but perhaps if friend DS is right, he's not far wrong.
