[At my school, a new girl has come. .. She visits a local homeless shelter, dresses modestly, hasn't ever had a boyfriend and wants to save herself for marriage, does her homework, and is really kind and considerate. She doesn't drink or do drugs, and doesn't like parties. The only problem is, she's atheist.]
Being an atheist, she has no real reason to stick with her moral beliefs, yet it seems as if she's doing a good job at it so far. With peer pressure and without God, it's very likely that she could fall into sin, but it's a lot less likely if you're there to be a good Christian influence in her life.

Yeah, totally, you know that morality doesn't come from a vacuum. *cough*
Guess what's been around longer than Christianity? It's called empathy, which sparks what we like to call morality.
Being an atheist, she has no real reason to stick with her moral beliefs
You just can't comprehend anyone behaving morally without the threat of divine punishment, can you?
Make up your mind. Either atheists are in complete lack of moral OR NOT. Occam razor disagrees and, looking at statistics at the Biblical Belt, it sticks out a mile who succumbs more to peer pressure and sin.
I used to know a girl like that, except she was fundamentalist Christian. (Not a fundie, though. She belived in a literal interpretation of the Bible but wasn't a bitch about it)
Then she met a guy, fucked him, and started drinking.
You can take your Christian influences and shove 'em.
AH, but what if we fill in the rest of the details...
"She visits a local homeless shelter..."to harvest their blood for her Satanic rituals!
"...dresses modestly..." to conceal her massive tattoos, needle tracks, and scars from self-cutting!!
"...hasn't ever had a boyfriend..." but has had dozens of girlfriends!!!
"...wants to save herself for marriage..." as soon as they legalize same-sex unions!!!!
"...does her homework..." so she can go to a liberal college and become a lawyer for the ACLU!!!!!
"...and is really kind and considerate..." until she puts on her jackboots and leather bustier!!!!!!
"...She doesn't drink or do drugs..." they do her!!!!!!!
"...she doesn't like parties..." but she loves orgies!!!!!!!!
Sounds like a fun girl!
So, she needs a Christian influence in her life to make her keep doing the things she's already doing, because she could decide to switch over to being an immoral person without provocation...
"This arch could collapse at any time!"
Christian influence - /'k??st??n '?nflu?ns/ n. The ceaseless, relentless attempt by the "moral majority" to force you to swallow their shit, no questions asked. It is usually accompanied by severe hostility and a persecution complex.
Example -
"Mommy, Johnny at school says that he's an atheist. What should I do?"
"Well, Timmy. The only thing you can do is be a good Christian influence, and if he doesn't conform, you eliminate him."
To be fair, the underlying statement here ("Be a good influence to your friends") is actually not a bad idea. It's all the "atheists are immoral" bullshit that fucks it all up.
Also, Hertzyscowicz, that whole site is FSTDT material. Why stop at the thread?
I'd like to think I do most of those things...I volunteer for Hospice, dress modestly (most of the time), but I have had a boyfriend, just one, and for almost 2 years. I'm not saving myself for marriage though. I almost always do my homework and try to be kind and considerate. I never drink or do drugs, I don't even drink caffeine, although I do enjoy a good lan party.
and I'm an atheist just like that girl.
Kind of troubling for the "atheists are immoral" hypothesis eh?
I love it.
An atheist behaves poorly. It's because he doesn't have God guiding him.
An atheist behaves well. Well, that's great but he could go on a murderapetheft spree at any second.
A Christian behaves well. It's the Godly guidance.
A Christian behaves poorly. He never really was a Christian anyways. or he didn't really do those bad things, he's just being persecuted. Wait'll they find the evil atheist that REALLY did those abhorrent things.
Oh yes, we poor atheist are only ever good on accident. It’s a miracle if we can go a week without a murdering rampage. We don’t have clearly defined values and well thought out ethics like people who are only good because their deity told some one to tell some one to write it down that they shouldn’t be murdering pricks. Seriously, we atheist are in constant danger of becoming moral degenerates so hurry up and pray.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
