“We already knew that Mark Foley claims he’s an alcoholic who suffers from mental illness, and yesterday his lawyer told us what everyone in Washington already knew—Foley is gay. What apparently no one knew was that Foley was allegedly abused by a clergyman when he was a teenager in high school. Since Foley is a Catholic, the suggestion is that a priest abused him.

“As for the alleged abuse, it’s time to ask some tough questions. First, there is a huge difference between being groped and being raped, so which was it Mr. Foley? Second, why didn’t you just smack the clergyman in the face? After all, most 15-year-old teenage boys wouldn’t allow themselves to be molested. So why did you?”

There are very very few things in this world that could possibly make me feel bad for Mark Foley. This is one. Fuck, no one should ever have to face a crazy, moronic, hurtful comment like that.
Not that I'm a fan of Foley's regardless, understand. He's a shit. Just, so's the OP here.
Well, I don't for a minute believe that Foley was ever abused by a clergyman. His credibility is effectively less than zero now.
This story comes out, and he resigns. Not when his colleagues find out, but when the media does. So there goes his claim of "doing the right thing." If he wanted to do the "right thing" he would have resigned when the Ethics Committee met about it.
Then he signs himself into rehab and claims alcoholism, despite not a single one of his friends or associates ever having the slightest suspicion he was one. While I'm not outright stating that Foley is not an alcoholic, I doubt it. The transcripts of his posts are lucid, coherent, and all properly spelled. Not in itself proof that he was sober, but pretty strong evidence.
Then he admits he's gay, and that he was abused by a clergyman, implying that being abused made him gay, I suppose. First he blames alcohol, then he blames priest-abuse.
What's next? Is he going to blame his behavior on Ted Kennedy giving him a hummer in the Rotunda?
To make matters slimier (as if that were possible at this point), the Repubs start blaming the Democrats ! Yes, the Democrats are at fault because, oh this is great, because they knew all about it and didn't tell the Republican leadership! Then they blame the media for publicizing it! Fox News even went so far as to "mistakenly" switch the "R" for "Republican" under his name on their newscasts with a "D" for...well, you can figure that out.
Remember that last little shred of dignity Fox News had? Well, wave buh-bye to it.
What the...? Are you fucking kidding me?
OK, Foley is playing the victim card better than any man in history.
"It's not my fault! I'm an alcoholic!"
"It's not my fault! I was abused by a priest!"
"It's not my fault! The Democrats should have stopped me!"
"It's not my fault! The media should have respected my privacy!"
Sigh. Sometimes the shit gets so deep you need a snorkel.
I never would have thought I'd feel sorry for Foley, but there you have it. While I abhor everything about the man, William Donohue has reached a new low for humanity. Congratuations, you tool, you just made us side with the paedophile.
Its just one lying Republican hypocrit insulting another lying Republican hypocrit.
Also, speaking as a European, the first time I saw Foley on tv I knew he was gay. Americans just never spot it.
In his 60s, single, never married, left school to set up a restaurant with his mother. The voice...
He should be on a British sitcom.
I'm with Sandman; I don't believe the lying asshole. Now, if he was indeed raped by a priest, then I feel sorry for him. Ignoring the subject of this post, the content is abhorrent. Another rape-victim-blamer, another person on my kill list.
Even if he was abused by a clergyman, while that scores him some belated sympathy points, it doesn't even remotely excuse his own behavior here; he is still entirely and solely responsible for that, and all this effort to shift the blame just makes him more and more reprehensible, in my opinion.

I've got some tough questions for Mr. Donohue. First, how can you call yourself a decent human being while blaming the alleged victim for his molestation? Second, are you deliberately trying to win sympathy points for Foley by acting as despicable as possible?
Foley claims to be an alcoholic, but there is little evidence that he is one and his word is not trustworthy. He's gay, but this doesn't matter. He's in trouble for making unwanted sexual advances to teens. Foley claims to have been abused by a clergyman, but again, there's no evidence but his word, which is worthless. In any case, it would not excuse his actions. Foley would get sympathy if it were true, and he gets sympathy for being forced to live in the closet by Republican bigots, but that still doesn't excuse what he did.
If you've been taught that priests and clergymen are trustworthy Acme Men of Gawd, would you just punch one in the face? Keep in mind that you could be arrested for assault; punching leaves a physical mark and groping doesn't, plus people would probably take his word over yours people tend to put absurd amounts of trust in anyone who puts on a funny hat and robe.
Oh, and Ramen, Sandman, but don't forget that some people tried to excuse the Republican coverup of Foley's actions by saying: "Republicans who exposed Foley would be accused of gay-bashing." This, from the party with a platform based on gay-bashing!
Foley was a damned fool who couldn't come to terms with his own identity and tried to hide behind conservatism. When called out, he threw up every excuse in the book except the obvious one -- "I'm gay but I went after teenage boys because I didn't have the guts to hit on grown men."
Donohue, on the other hand, is pretty much a thoroughgoing bigoted religious asshole. If I was still Catholic, I wouldn't want him purporting to speak for my faith, and now that I haven't been Catholic for a number of years, I'm glad he can't claim to speak for me at all.
most 15-year-old teenage boys wouldn’t allow themselves to be molested.
Maybe not, but those who were raised to believe that the pastor or priest was God's representative on earth and must be obeyed would have a hard time saying no.
Waitwaitwait...
"There's a difference between being groped and being raped!"
Good to know.
Next time a woman claims she was sexually abused let's crack that one out.
"WHY DIDN'T YOU SMACK HIM IN THE FACE?"
Er...because one of the reasons that adults sexually abuse children is because they know the kid will not act out for fear of being called a liar?
Confused?
