"If there was no God would there be any reason why the strongest man in the world shouldn't kill anyone he wants if it'll better himself?"
Yes, many reasons.
For instance, without others, he wouldn't have access to all of their knowledge. He might someday wish there was a doctor or a plumber or a farmer to help him.
Altruism. He might have the compassion not to victimize the weak just because he can. One doesn't need the Christian God to be a good person.
Also, several "lesser" persons could band together and beat the stuffing out of the one most powerful man.

Sorry about that"
Yes, you should be sorry for suggesting such a stupid and insulting idea.
You really enjoy beating that dead horse, don't you? Gawd/religion has no monopoly on morality/ethics, quite the opposite. If your own holy fairytales book is to be believed, your god's morality is very elastic.
No, there isn't. Which is why the rest of us who aren't terminally stupid would band together and hand that idiot his ass on a platter.
Like, say, was done to Ghengis Khan and Julius Caesar and Napoleon and Hitler and Mussolini and John Lackland and Kaiser Wilhelm and Louis XVI and Oliver Cromwell and, hopefully someday soon, Bush.
(Anyone want to bet that Joe91 is a vehement Bush supporter and doesn't see the irony?)
To begin with, what do you consider "strongest"?, political, physical..........?. Second, because it actually happens. Look Bush, look the Iranian president.........are they actually afraid of God?, is he sending his police to spank them?
Why won't the strongest man kill anyone he wants as long as there's no God? You know, someone thought about this already.
In the beginning... there was no society (this is hypothetical, now). Everyone was for himself. But everyone needs to sleep, no matter how strong. Thus anyone can be killed by anyone else. Of course, this makes life solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.
All you want from a life like that is an out. That's why we come together and form moral norms and societies. If the societies we build don't deliver on that, we change them. You really don't need God for this.
So thats why there is no murder, torture, rape, and war in this world!! There must be a God, because can you imagine a world with all that stuff?
Tiny B,
About Cromwell, yeah I know that he most likely died from complications arising from malaria. I included him in the list because when the Royalists returned to power, they dug up his body, hung it in chains from London Bridge, and chopped off the head.
It was a posthumous ass-handing, I guess.
:)
Duh, 'cuz it's against the law, maybe?
Every society, regardless of religion or lack of it has certain basic rules. Studies show no difference between the moral beliefs of atheists and religious people. It's even been proposed that morality has an inherited genetic basis. See Mark Hauser Interview "... in a large sample of moral dilemmas that involve questions concerning the permissibility of harming other individuals, we have found no significant differences in the pattern of moral judgments between people who are religious and people who are atheists." . The idea that people derive their moral sense from God and would behave differently if they lacked fear of Him is nonsense.
Sandman, Genghis Khan was never defeated. He was also a brilliant tactician and fairly kind to his subjects in the world of conquerers. No one knows his exact cause of death but it's either from a wound inflicted during battle or from a simple sickness just as many great conquerers before and after.
Sorry for the Genghis rant, but I've always had a soft spot for him and too many people think of him the way they should be thinking of Tamerlane... or Kublai who ruined the empire that Genghis had built...
Actually I was thinking of Kublai. I'll leave the original quote alone so your's isn't confusing, though.
There is some evidence that Ghengis may have been killed by ambitious members of his own military, but it's pretty much just conjecture and legend. With Ghengis, I guess I would be thinking more along the lines that people did, in fact, band together against him.
Your definition of "better" sucks!
Oh you mean, nefarious gain, as opposed to bettering himself as a person.
In that case, Bush is indeed proof there is no God. (Or God is a greenback - in God we trust indeed!)
If you had a brain would you think that the strongest man in the world could go on a killing spree that would 'better himself'? You realize this strong man wouldn't be the size of Godzilla, right? I mean, he could easily be killed despite his physical abilities.
Yes, it's called Hamilton's Rule.
If R × B > C, then altruism is favoured.
R is the genetic relatedness of the receiver of an altruistic act to the altruist. B is the benefit that the receiver gets. C is the cost of the altruistic act to the altruist.
In the human race, C is always negligible.
It's a good thing Bush believes in God. If he didn't, there would be no reason why .... Oh, dear, I forgot what I was going to say.
If there was no God...
There isn't.
...would there be any reason why the strongest man in the world shouldn't kill anyone he wants if it'll better himself?
Yeah. Morality. Killing is wrong. Duh.
Also, it wouldn't better himself. Not possible.
Of course, keep in mind, that you believe that God is the "strongest man in the world," and that he is entitled to do anything he wants. Christians, it seems, can't understand morality. They are unable to comprehend that people could have rights than any and all authorities are bound to respect.
So, they presume: "If we take God out of the picture, then the strongest guy remaining takes his spot."
You, Joe, have just described what you believe, except with the petty and sociopathic character of God as the "strongest man in the world."
Except he doesn't kill anyone. No, he's got a vindictive and sadistic streak. He doesn't kill people. He tortures them. Forever.
woops sorry about that
Sorry about that
Well, at least you apologize for your absurd, ridiculous, and abysmal attempt at logic. Now try changing your position. Come on, it's not that hard!
would there be any reason why the strongest man in the world shouldn't kill anyone he wants if it'll better himself?
Because he has compassion and might need their help in the future? Even superman had weaknesses.
Sorry
Yeah, you're the sorriest thing I've ever seen.
Yes, because in this wonderful, god-created world that you live in today, nobody kills anyone for their own selfish reasons.
It's okay, Joe; don't worry. We all say stupid stuff now and then. At least you realised your mistake, I suppose.
(I know that's not what he meant, but please, leave me my illusions...)
Confused?
