When my children were in elementary school, evolution was taught in the science classroom. I didn't like it, but was unable to homeschool them. We have taught them the bible truth from birth, so I wasn't really too worried about it. I just told them to learn enough to pass the tests and then throw it away, because it is a lie from satan.
But then, when my daughter was in 10th grade (2003), in her World History classroom, she was given an assignment which included several different choices she could make. All of them were based on evolutionary beliefs (ex. Pretend you are living 30 billion years ago and write a letter to a friend living today. This was actually one of the least preposterous ones!). As stated, this was a history class! To me, this says that the schools are not only teaching it as a theory in science, but as an historical fact.

Theory and fact are not mutually exclusive.
Theories explain and rationally tie together facts.
Evolution is a fact, the ToE explains that fact.

Umm, isn't the theory of evolution a little advanced for elementary school?
But, then again, the bible is way too fucking advanced (and potentially psychologically damaging) for a preschool infant, and these people don't seem to have any problem with that.
Pretend you are living 30 billion years ago and write a letter to a friend living today
That actually is a pretty stupid assignment.
I think it's simply further evidence that BBB's brain automatically categorizes all dates indicating that the world is older than 10,000 years as "eleventy trill-gazillions".
ex. Pretend you are living 30 billion years ago and write a letter to a friend living today.
Well, you pulled that from your ass. The universe is only about half as old as 30 billion years (though this estimate could change in the future). It was probably something like:
"Pretend you are living 10 000 years ago and write a letter to a friend living today."
I wonder if fundies could do the math "half as old as 30 billion"?
To write a letter to your friend you would have to describe the world as it was in prehistoric times, pretending you are there. Creative and informative, not stupid at all. This teacher sees this assignment as a fun way to utilize what you are being taught.
Yes, evolution is a fact.
Parents like you should be arrested for abuse, brainwashing your kids with the bible. Asshat.
Yeah, that's a stupid idea for an assignment.
Evolution is still a fact, though.
Um, yes, as a scientific theory about stuff that has happened, that also makes it sort of history. You know, what with history being the study of stuff that has happened...
So, my Ap world history class was thought through the eyes of the church. And the effect history had on the church, and we started with Abraham, it was public school.
Riiiiight, because any number of years greater than 6,000 might as well be 30 billion.
It still sounds like a lame assignment, but not half as lame as this lie about it.

Pretend you are living 30 billion years ago and write a letter to a friend living today.
Yeah, I believe that. Since the universe is far younger than 30 billion years, either the teacher is a nincompoop or you're lying. Guess which one I'm betting on.
When my children were born, my wife and I made the decision to always answer their questions as truthfully as their developing minds could comprehend. Goddidit was never used as an answer, and the Bible was only touched on when discussing assorted world mythologies.
We discovered that children have an incredible thirst for knowledge and a pretty remarkable bullshit detector once they get the hang of critical thinking.
Our job is done. We effectively inoculated our kids against religion.
"All of them were based on evolutionary beliefs (ex. Pretend you are living 30 billion years ago and write a letter to a friend living today. This was actually one of the least preposterous ones!)."
The fucking universe didn't exist 30 billion years ago you moron. Not to mention that this has nothing to do with evolution in any conceivable way .
"To me, this says that the schools are not only teaching it as a theory in science, but as an historical fact."
I wonder why that could be...
In middle school, we had an assignment like that: imagine you are a young Jewish girl/boy during WWII/The Holocaust and keep a journal. How would you feel about what was heppening?
I actually liked the assignment and enjoyed writing it (ok, literature major,) but still...good idea. Creativity and critical thinking involved.
I assume something like that went on with his daughter, only probably something like 1,000 years, actually, at most.
I hope she uses all of her available creativity and critical thinking skills, and that she gets an A and it helps advance her thinking.
Moron.
30 billion? That would be before the Universe existed.
And evolution has nothing to do with History, which is the study of the recorded human past, not the biological ancestry of the species. Hence the term 'prehistoric'is used to indicate events that occurred before the emergence of literate societies and the start of recorded history.

I'm curious - how did that strategy hold up when they hit you with the dreaded Sex Question?
"Pretend you are living 10,000 years ago and write a letter to a friend living today."
*carves person* *carves sun* *carves animals*
Just sayin'.
30 billion years sounds like an exageration. I'm geussing it was more in the 10,000 to 1,000,000 year range. Then again, that doesnt really matter because when tanking about age of the universe, any number above 6,000 is pretty much the same.
P.S. old earth =/= evolution
There was no 30 BYA. Time began @ the Big Bang c. 15 BYA. The atoms and molecules that make me and you didn't exist before then, so there was no before the Big Bang. Or, can't you wrap your brain around that?
"Pretend you are living 30 billion years ago"
That's rather difficult in a 13 billion year old universe.
Looks like you're lying again.
What does your username stand for? Big Bag of Bullshit?
There would be something seriously wrong with America's education system if a 10th Grade teacher posed a question like that. Shit, we all know pens hadn't been invented 30 billion years ago.
30 billion years ago?

This is a diagram that shows the expansion of our universe. Please note that it only goes back 13.7 billion years. We don't know what there was, if anything, before the universe came into existence 13.7 billion years ago. It would be an outrageous for a school to ask someone to pretend they were living 30 billion years ago and write a letter to a friend. Mostly because the universe didn't exist yet! This is a world history class, so why would they have an assignment where they had students pretend they existed before history, before the world, and before the entire freaking universe began to exist?
I think that you are either lying or seriously mistaken. I suppose that human evolution might be included very briefly in a world history class, but the most I can see anyone going back with that in around 3 million years. And even that's stretching it. Did you get the number 30 billion get mixed up with something like 300,000 or 30,000? That's slightly more likely than 3 million, but it's still before what we would consider to be before history really began. Did you get it mixed up with 10,000 years ago, when civilization began? I guess that for anyone who thinks that a universe has only been in existence for around 6,000 years or so instead 13.7 billion, I suppose that this sort of mistake is hardly surprising.
"she was given an assignment which included several different choices she could make. All of them were based on evolutionary beliefs (ex. Pretend you are living 30 billion years ago and write a letter to a friend living today. This was actually one of the least preposterous ones!)"
I'l say. Seeing as the universe is around 14 billion years old.
Lying for Jebus much, B(ullshit)B(ullshit)B(ullshit)?
