Saudi Arabia is the only country to deny women the right to drive. But despite renewed protests against the ban this year, resistance to change remains strong among conservative royals and clerics.

A report this week by Kamal Subhi, a former professor at King Fahd University, warned that allowing women to drive would provoke a surge in prostitution, pornography, homosexuality and divorce. Within 10 years of the ban being lifted, it warned, there would be "no more virgins" in the kingdom.

Mr Subhi, who sent his report to all 150 members of the Shura Council, the country's legislative body, said moral decline was already discernible in other Gulf states where women were allowed to drive.

Well, yes. But really, since when the hell do they matter? Who gives a damn what they think?

I hear that once women were allowed to drive in China the price of tea skyrocketed also.

Religious "morality" consider purity to be a virtue in and of itself. If you believe that sexual taboos are of divine origins, then there is no need to examine them further, and anyone who try to attribute them to the selfish reproductive interests of a traditionally male ruling class is an heretic and an infidel.

That's the main use people have found for religion, really. To disguise the ugliest aspects of human nature under a veneer of holiness. No wonder how Abrahamic religions became so successful.

Brendan Rizzo has a point (in his second post--not the nukes, obviously) about giving Saudi Arabia and all other Muslim theocracies some sort of sanctions for their human rights abuses against women.

If you were to substitute Jews, or Hindus, or any racial minority for women, and subject them to the same laws and restrictions imposed upon Muslim women, the UN and the whole world would be up in arms, drawing parallels to Nazi Germany.

In fact that actually did happen when the US fitst went into Afghanistan after 9/11, and it became publicized that the Taliban required Hindus to wear certain identifying clothing (yellow, IIRC). While there was much discussion about the deplorable treatment of the women there, that was, and still is, regarded as simply a "cultural" thing for us to shake our heads at. But the stigmatization of Hindus, who were for the most part left alone but for the dress requirements, was regarded as a far greater and more dangerous evil.

After all, it's only women, who've been used to taking it for thousands of years. Oil is so much more important.

The perfect way of doing so: the car companies start making more cars powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Make such cheap (they eventually will become so, as mass production drives down prices)

Then Saudi Arabia (and thus the House of Saud, also the Wahhabi clerics) are fucked. The price to pay for relying upon just one resource for your country's wealth.

Volkswagen make a £2-3 million loss on each Bugatti Veyron sold. A small price to pay, US car companies, for destroying a country whose rulers you've previously had to kiss the arses of, right?

It'd be worth it when - in the future - said House of Saud - now destitute, and it's 'king' in rags, having to kiss your arses, and in return for the privilege of selling it's oil as a mere lubricant, all religion in that country has to be scrapped, said Wahhabi clerics be publicly executed, and Mecca to become a tourist attraction for all people. Even Atheists.

Moral: In Japan, the phrase in business circles (from small shops, to major industries) 'The customer is God' exists for a reason.
