Ah we were going over this issue in my Politics class this week.
The crux of the problem is this: Homosexuality is a form of sexual abuse. Therefore, if the government condones the "marriage" of two sodomites, the government is therefore condoning sexual abuse.
Furthermore, in the lens of our Federalist legal system we have to ask ourselves two hard questions.

NO.
It literally cannot be because of two consenting adults. You may as well say all sex is a form of sex abuse. I entirely doubt not only that this was said in a class of any kind but that you do not go to any class and would be directly kicked out of any learning institution that took you seriously for one second.
You may, however, be kept around as a joke, so there is that possibility.

Your Politics class should have told you that different people frame problems in different ways in order to get the answers they want. Trouble is, your framing of the problem is without foundation in fact.
1. "Marriage" is a legal term. Therefore the three branches of government have a right to define it as they please - look at the Defense of Marriage Act.
A synonym of abuse is to misuse something.
Since the penis was made to be used to its counterpart the vagina, and that is its proper sexual use, to use it elsewise sexually as is the case in homosexuality would be the classic definition of sexual abuse.
The consent argument was indeed brought up as I predicted. To which I countered that they can still consent to be abused and it is still abuse as per it being misuse of the sexual parts. To make an analogy a masochistic person can consent to being physically abused, but it is still abuse. A drug user can consent of himself to abuse medication, but it is still drug abuse. The professor and class was not able to refute this.
As far as the claims this is not in the Bible, this only shows those making the claims have not read the Bible. For indeed the Bible calls homosexuals "abusers of themselves with mankind".
Ended up getting a high A in the class which overall helped me make the Dean's List.

The phrase 'sexual abuse' refers to the second definition.misuse , but it's not drug abuse unless the person takes the antibiotics themselves and becomes addicted. If I use my chair as a place to stack books, I'm misusing my chair (it's meant to be sat on) but I'm not abusing it.
Homosexuality is a form of sexuality, like heterosexuality.
If the government doesn't "condone" the marriage of two lesbians, the government is guilty of discrimination.
1. The federal government have a duty to make sure that everyone gets equal protection. This is a legal issue, which the Constitution clarifies in the Fourteenth Amendment.

Lesbians are the ones least likely to get STD's (after asexual people, of course), so if anything, only lesbian marriages ought to be condoned by the government...
