Evolution is only popular because it's a belief that, if true, means that there are no real set of morals. You can do whatever you want and not have to answer to anyone. Similar to idols like Baal or what not.

As usual, that canard falls flat on its face.
Morality comes from the fact that humans evolved to be social creatures, who correctly deduced even in their primitive Stone-Age world that intra-tribal harmony is better than intra-tribal disharmony. Like the human race itself, man and woman's sense of right and wrong evolves over the ages, being refined by ourselves and by each other as we improve our understanding of the world in which we live.
Sure, a person can "do whatever s/he wants without having to answer to anyone", but nowadays, that requires being a true hermit, cutting one's self from all human culture. I think even you would understand that very few humans have the mindset to pull that off for more than a year or so. On the other hand, a person who takes that "do whatever I want" attitude too far while among other humans will be subject to the morality that humans invented, shut away in a cage for a long time or even executed, for the sake of intra-cultural harmony.
One more thing to ponder, NFK: you seem to imply that, without an invisible sky-daddy being the one to set up rules for humans to follow, you and your fellow Christians would almost all degenerate into a bunch of robbing, raping, murdering thugs...yet you're the ones worthy of Heaven while we who think for OURSELVES are forced to settle for an afterlife in Hell?!
"Evolution is only popular because it's a belief that, if true, means that there are no real set of morals."
How in the hell did you come to such an asinine conclusion as that?
"You can do whatever you want and not have to answer to anyone. Similar to idols like Baal or what not."
Yeah, sure it is. Almost exactly like it except that it's not.
"it's a belief that, if true, means that there are no real set of morals."
Sounds kind of like...ummm...CHRISTIANITY. In fact, the idea that you could have done anything you wanted to do before bellowing "JAYZUS save MEEE!!" is effectively one of the big fundie selling points: you can be a goat-raping axe murderer, but as long as you call upon Jesus to white-out your sins, you are exempt from any and all punishment. Redeemed, saved, innocent....free from guilt and free from any significant consequences. This is supposedly a remarkable display of your God's mercy, that even such a bad person can be forgiven. But, it exposes a rather grim fact: the only thing that you people are held accountable for, ultimately, is whether or not you are a Christian! That is the only virtue, and being non-Christian is the only real sin. So...what were you saying about morality?
Evolution is only popular because it's a belief that, if true, means that there are no real set of morals.
You're mistaking "objective" for "real". Subjective morals are still very real, they're simply not the only real morals.
You can do whatever you want and not have to answer to anyone.
Not true - you don't have to answer to any higher power, but you still have to answer to yourself, family, friends, local community, country, species, life, the universe and everything. Piss them off, and you're alone in the storm, like it or not. Work with them, and you can make this world a living paradise for yourself and everyone else.
That's the use of a social contract, subjective as it may be.
What the fuck is this "you get to do whatever you want without answering to anybody" bullshit???
We answer to society if we do something fucked up, we don't need fear of some "god" to make us do good.
Maybe we do what we do not out of fear of punishment but out of true concern for others? hmm? It's much more plausible that we should help each other because it benefits the species as a whole, than to only do something good for someone because Sky Daddy will get angry if we don't, while still secretly harboring ill will towards everyone and just waiting for a chance to lash out.
It seriously gets me when these guys pull that "if we don't have god we'll just go on killing sprees" bit, and then turn around and claim the moral highground over people who are decent for the sake of being decent...
I have worshipped what not since the age of ten, and I consider myself a very moral person.
I got my morality from my friends, family and neighbours, and from my conscience. Unlike fundie morons such as NFK, when I lose my faith which I do most days I don't go around slaughtering.
fergus
You see, there's a difference between not answering to anything after your life, and leading a good life where you leave people behind to remember you.
I have morals. The idea of God is still stupid.
The old "God gives a set of absolute morals" therefore no god = no morals or relative morality.
Try robbing a store with a gun in new york city, shoot someone on the street and let me know how that works out for you.
Societies have rules so they can function. The larger the society the more complex the rules become.
Our morals come from evolution, silly; in order to survive, we need to cooperate. In order to cooperate, we have to behave well towards each other. Those who cooperated well, survived longer than those who didn't.
We have to answer to each other. Baal is just as imaginary as your god, silly.
Confused?
