Atheism is the height of arrogance for it says: "If I cannot fathom God, then God does not exist." You seem to glibly dismiss the fact that you live in a world wholly limited by your five senses, or by your brains limited capacity to develop instruments to reach a little beyond your senses, and thus are as unaware of what the total sum of reality may be as one who limited by eyesight, only sees visible light and thus categorically denies that a whole range from infrared to ultraviolet light does not--indeed CANNOT exist--because you cannot sense it. In fact, you mock that which you do not understand for no other reason than you cannot understand it. And to mock 95% of the people on the globe who sense - not without reason - that a higher power than themselves may be at work in theat same universe to me is the height of foolishness... and arrogance

Actually, it's you fundies whose mantra is "if I can't understand it, it can't possibly have any other cause than God (and my specific version of God, at that)". Atheists believe that God doesn't exist, not because God's existence is something they can't fathom, but because God's existence has never been proven (and no, circular logic like "the Bible is proof of God because the Bible says so" doesn't count).

You seem to glibly dismiss the fact that you live in a tiny, sheltered world wholly limited by a collection of Bronze Age fairy tales, or by whatever some priest/minister/other religious authority figure tells you of such tales. Beyond those limits lies a world that you insist does not (indeed, CANNOT) possibly exist, a world wherein people live honorable, moral lives without needing to kiss your invisible sky-daddy's backside--simply because your sheltered mind won't let you see it.

That particular logical fallacy you just used is called Appeal to Popularity. The mere fact that a large number of people support a certain idea doesn't necessarily make it factual (after all, 95% of the people once thought the planet Earth to be flat; by your "logic", that should've made the Earth actually be flat, but it isn't).

First problem - how do they sense this higher power, when atheists apparently cannot? Your argument is built on the principle that atheists do not believe in God because they cannot sense God. What makes them different from the other 95% that they can't sense God, when everyone else can?

Second - if these 95% can sense God, then yes, their belief is not without reason. But if they, like atheists, cannot actually sense God in any way, what do they base their belief on? Not reason.

Third, the fact that these 95% of the people in the world "sense" that God exists, BUT they do not sense the same God or have any sense of the same NUMBER of gods, indicates that the belief has more to do with human psychology than actual existence of God.

And fourth, most atheists just mock the fundamentalists who think it's legitimate to say "nearly everyone believes in God" and in the same breath say "only my small Christian denomination holds the truth about God."

There are many sound historical reasons why many people in the world believe in some kind of deity the Christian 'God' being just one of them.

There are many sound scientific and logical reasons why many people believe that belief in some kind of deity is unsound.

In primitive times when most theistic beliefs originated, science was barely in its infancy. Now, in its increasing maturity, science throws more rational light on matters issues that were previously reserved for priests and theologians to explain as best they could, using hand-me-down myths and legends based on nothing but superstition, ignorance and the human need for answers to the mystery of life

Fundies of all sects and religions, who have a lot of certainty and arrogance to lose, cannot accept this. But they are pissing into the wind.

Pick a religion, any religion. No more than one-third of the world's population even nominally belongs to that religion. The proportion who are Truly Saved True Believers is, of course, far smaller.

That's why image intensifiers exist, so we can see in infra-red wavelengths - and there's UV imagers too. We can even see heat using thermal imagers as well. They have all kinds of practical applications; in the military (as targeter sensor suites for weapon aiming), and especially civilian uses (by rescue operatives, etc).

We may not have the advanced bioelectronic full-spectrum imaging facilities of the fictional Yautja (as demonstrated in "Predator II"), but we can create devices that ensure we can.

And a rainbow doesn't actually exist, but we can see it (via the prismatic effect of sunlight through tiny water droplets suspended in the air after a rain shower). See where this is leading to?

'We cannot fathom God', eh? Oh, I think you credit us with too little intelligence & imagination. Thus is demonstrated the narrow vision & one-dimensional thinking of fundies. When we read a science fiction or fantasy novel, we picture in our minds what we read - that being the imagination. But at least when we put down that book and get back to normal living, that world we imagined being immersed in is just that - fiction & fantasy. We can tell the difference. Whereas when you read that Bible, you can't differentiate between fact & fiction, because you've been deluded into thinking what you're reading is FACT.

And that's the difference.

An odd quote this one, don't know whether you are simple or just confused sonofabiscuiteater.

I, for one, am well aware of the limitations of my poor, meagre brain, as probably are most atheists. But this realisation by us doesn't stop us thinking, enquiring and delighting in finding things out about the world.

We also are totally aware that our five senses are limited to those areas that best enable our survival in this environment. After all modern conveniences and technology are just that - modern. The vast majority of our time on earth, hundreds of thousands of years, has been spent relying on those "limited" senses in a great struggle for survival.

Well of course, we also appreciate that we only perceive a narrow portion of the electro-magnetic spectrum with our eyes. But, again, this limitation hasn't stopped us developing the tools and the technology than can detect the other portions of the electro-magnetic spectrum. And we have learned an enormous amount about the universe that we would have been unable to with just our eyes.

I, and most other atheists, wouldn't have the arrogance to fathom God. We'll leave that to you. But, if you think the ludicrous waffle that is normally disgorged by the earnest but arrogant fundie proselytizer is going to change anyone's mind apart from the most gullible, then rage on.

To be honest, I and most atheists, don't care what religions that people believe in. But often, they become so brainwashed by their religion that they become either a nuisance or a source of humour, that's when they attract the mocking that they don't want.

As for being aware that there could well be things outside the human range of knowledge, well of course, doesn't everyone. For instance, in my case, I have an artistic urge, so I compose music to satisfy that human craving for self expression, and to express the unknown.

However, I'm not in the least tempted to select one of the existing religions to join, neither am I tempted to start a new one. And why the massed ranks of fundiedom think I would be interested in joining such a particularly hateful, bigoted and irrational bunch, beggars belief.

So, sorry sonofabiscuiteater, still no go.

first of all, here's another case of someone making sweeping generalizations about "atheists". i guess that term is being used to describe both people who deny the existance of god, and people, like me, who hold absolutely no belief one way or the other.
i agree with this person only in the fact that, yes, we do only have a limited number of senses and that our view of reality is based upon the information that is gathered. but, my thing is, if there is a supernatural, then it is completely unknowable as far as physical reality goes, so why live your life based on something that you will never, ever find out about? why? that's what i don't understand.

Oh so THATS why you think I say there's no God!
WRONG!
I cannot fathom relativity nor quantum mechanics, yet I'm perfectly happy to accept they exist. Here's the real reasons:
Firstly, I disbelieve because all the proofs that there is a God have turned out to be bullshit. (We can prove God exists- God strikes sinners with lightning... no, God strikes church towers with lightning- unless they use lightning rods. Et cetera ad nauseam.)
Second, I disbelieve because all the measurable results that would flow from the existence of a God do not in fact exist. (God does not heal believer amputees no mater how hard they pray.)
Thirdly I disbelieve because people who tell me that evolution is false will lie to me about other things too.
Fourthly I disbelieve because 'God's Word' makes him out to be an insane petty feeble monster. (You pinched my apple- I'll kill you and all your children (in my mercy and goodness.) But I'll tell you what- you kill my Son for me and we'll call it square.)
Fifthly I disbelieve because I have had personal experience of God - when He invited me to have gay sex. I think I was delusional at the time, dropping off to sleep- I also think everyone who has had personal experience of God is delusional.
Sixthly I disbelieve because the Bible is full of errors of fact. Pi is not equal to three, etc.
Seventh I disbelieve because the Bible contradicts itself so badly that no-one has ever been able to write a single synopsis of Jesus life that includes all the stories of the Gospels in order.
Eighth I disbelieve because Jesus promised to come back in the first century BC and did not do so.
Ninth I disbelieve because God does NOT 'speak to the heart' of every human being- or if He does, He tells different stories to each of them.
Tenth I disbelieve because so many believers are irrational, or make up lies about my reasons for disbelieving, such as yourself.
Eleventh (one more than the commandments) the 'promises of God' such as 'whatever you ask in my name will be granted to you' are constantly broken.
There's plenty more reasons why its not arrogance but intellectual honesty that compels us to speak up for the truth of the non-existence of God, despite all the slanders propounded by religious nuts such as yourself.
