If Conspirator meant "should we accord animals the same rights that we accord each other?", then this is an interesting question.

Jane Goodall would say that the great apes (chimp, bonobo, gorilla, and orang) should all be given legal 'personhood' and a higher standard of protection than less-intelligent animals. This raises the question of what rights should be accorded to which animals: should netting a dolphin be considered assault? should whaling be considered murder? should bonobos be allowed to apply for citizenship and to vote? The last one is probably too far: Kanzi may be able to play Pacman, but he probably doesn't appreciate the idea of democracy.

And if we are assigning rights based on intelligence, what rights do we accord someone who evolution/mutation has given more intelligence than the rest of humanity? And who determines how we measure intelligence?

So, maybe this is fun after all.

And the day animals gain more rights than we humans is when one of them evolves to become at least like "Star Trek: Voyager"'s Species 8472, with a physiology - and the intelligence to develop biotechnological advancements - to make them superior to us. PROTIP: Just at the mention of 'Species 8472', even the Borg crap their implants. 'Resistance is not futile' indeed. But until that day...
