Greek mythology is some of the most beautiful literature in the Western Canon. And I doubt that anything you read in high school was anything close to "pornographic".

I attended public school. Oddly enough, in my entire time as a student, I never saw any overt sex, open drinking or drug use. While I know it goes on in some places, I'm more inclined to think you're attempting to exaggerate for effect.

Kids having sex in the hallways is a possibility. The 7th floor in my cegep building (basically a second level of "attic" that nothing ever went to) was a popular place, and my highschool was a private school ... All those old movies about the sex and debauchery in those christian or protestant "boarding schools" felt a lot more like tame documentaries after going there...

As for randy's statements there, they're pretty twisted in themselves. I mean, fuck, that's not even highschool... greek mythology? that was grade 3-4...

And there's a fuckload more 'jesus' than any other religion, even in quebec schools.

Welllllll. In my school we were taught about all the major religions including Christianity. You're just whining because they did'nt try and convert anyone or treat Christianity as anything special.

So Secular Humanism is a religion now, instead of a philosophy? I missed the memo on that one.

And yes, in a civics or humanities course, you WILL get exposed to information on "every other religion under the sun," not so that you can be converted but simply so that you'll know that they exist (and that there are people who follow them).

Pfff, "open sexual acts"? Only if you consider kissing such an act. There's NO WAY you could get away with openly fucking in the hallway of a high school. >_> As for the drugs and alcohol, I'm not terribly surprised. But, whoever brought them into the school was pretty ballsy and probably knew how not to get caught (like, by not sharing that stuff with a lot of people). As to the porn, what - did one of your friends sneak a Playboy into his locker and show you between classes or something? Viewing nudes in artwork is not porno.

Like what? Catcher in the Rye? Of Mice and Men? The Great Gatsby? And, you study Greek mythology in order to learn about themes, archetypes, literary devices, stuff like that. Besides, a lot of Western Civilization rests on concepts found in the cultures and myths of Greece and Rome. Don't you appreciate your own civilization (and not in a creepy, racist way)?

Pornographic novels? In high school?

I don't think I read anything for high school that could be considered pornographic. I mean, I'm certain we read books with sex in them, but nothing that I would consider "pornographic."

We read The Odyssey. I know that Odysseus sleeps with Calypso and Circe, but it's not really pornographic. But it is Greek mythology, so maybe that makes up for it.

Madame Bovary was about adultery, but it didn't have any graphic sex scenes. Not pornography.

Shakespeare has a lot of sex jokes and we read A Midsummer Night's Dream, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, and Hamlet. But I don't call that pornographic. And those are plays, not novels anyway.

What else was assigned reading in high school. To Kill a Mockingbird, Beowulf, Huckleberry Finn, The Princess Bride, Lord of the Flies, The Metamorphosis, The Death of Ivan Ilyich, Robinson Crusoe, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, The Stranger, sections of The Canterbury Tales, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, A Tale of Two Cities, White Noise, Death Comes for the Archbishop, The Crossing, The Road,sections of Ovid's Metamorphoses, and there were undoubtedly plenty of other books I can't remember right now. But I can't think of anything pornographic.

Okay, in senior year, in Advanced Placement English, the class was divided up into several groups. Each group chose a book to read and later created a presentation summarizing and presenting the major themes of the book to the class. My group chose Lolita. I don't think that counts as pornographic either. Disgusting? Horrifying? Yeah . . . pornographic -- not quite. If you read that book, well, I could see you at least making a case . . . but then, my friends and I chose that book from a long list of much tamer books . . .

Wait, I went to a private high school. So all of this is completely irrelevant. Damn.

EDIT: Wait, wait! I figured it out. We had to read Dante's Inferno as well. Does that count as porn? Sure, you weren't meant to get off on it, but at times it felt like Dante was writing a masturbatory fanfic. A high quality one, to be sure, but still . . .
