[Another, more rational, fundie has called out the others for believing that all gay men have HIV/AIDS and shouldn't donate blood.]

Maybe he's referring to my comment that I'd rather die than get gay blood. I stand by that. Blood borne diseases like AIDS and Hepatitis C are terrible, and they are far more prevalent in the gay male lifestyle. I know my husband feels the same. I'd rather die than battle those illnesses.

I am "banned" from donating blood due to a medication. If my blood were given to a pregnant mother it could cause fetal harm. I'm fine with that. I have no axe to grind over that. The gay community is constantly agitating the have the ban on blood donation lifted, even if it means causing harm to the population at large.

As a white woman married to a black (mixed race) man, I find it very angering when the gay community tries to equate their battle for dominance over Christian morals - with the civil rights struggle wherein my husband would have been killed for dating me, much less having married relations.

No one's killing the gays. I could care less what they do and how they do it; but don't try to blackmail and extort me into saying God's OK with it. It's fornication, just as bad as heterosexual fornication, and not something to be endorsed under any circumstances. I am always "nice" to everyone regardless. I have a transgendered cab driver I consider a good man; but I do pray for him to get right with God before the tribulation.

EVERYONE who wants to give blood is tested for diseases, and HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C in particular, stupid.

Gay people don't want "dominance over Christian morals", they are struggling for the exact same civil rights that black people and women have struggled, and are struggling, for. Gay people ARE killed for being in relationships with other gays, asshole!

What color is the sky in your world, Acts? Gay people are murdered or almost murdered every day. What God says is his own business, he will have to speak up for himself. Gay people ought to have the same rights as everyone else have. Fornication is an outdated, arbitrary concept, that has no bearing in today's society.

It's not a question of endorsing, but accepting, stupid. The transgender cab driver is in the right, God will have to get right with him/her before any silly "tribulation".

What have the last two paragraphs to do with donating blood? If you’d be really concerned about health issues, you would keep “Christian morals” out of the discussion. But so you just show that the health questions are just another excuse for your bigotry.

@Swede & Doubting Thomas: Yes, all the blood donations are checked, but due to the long incubation times of some diseases these tests are not 100% reliable. Because of that donors have to answer a questionnaire to determine if they belong to a risk group. ~~And guess what, at least at the blood drive I was a week ago, your sexual orientation was not something they asked about. Neither did they the twenty-odd times before that.~~

See my post below, being a gay male is still considered being in a risk group. That should be changed.

Acts, you must be exceptionally young. During the civil rights struggle, MANY preachers and pastors went on at great lengths about how gob meant for the races to be seperate and the "black race" was to be punished by serving the white race and mixing races was "evil" (still get that crap here).

In fact, I remember one preacher from Georgia if I remember correctly, stating that the reason there couldn't have one water fountain for everyone was because "the negros" had diseases from their "profligate and promiscuous way of life." In other words, all African Americans supposedly had the clap, and he was worried we'd all get the clap from drinking from one fountain because, you know, negros.

So whether it chaps your ass or not, in fact it is the same struggle using the same weapons.

You’ll have to answer about having contact to prostitutes, if you’re taking drugs, if you had any surgery, tattoos or piercing done or if you have been in a country with high risk of getting malaria, etc.

I guess the techniques for detecting diseases have gotten better the last few years. I can remember when I first donated, the time you were banned after surgery etc. was 6 months, now it is only 4 months.

Strangely enough you will still be asked if you spent time in the UK during the “BSE times”.

EDIT: I just checked Wikipedia, and apparently being a gay man is indeed considered a reason to deny a blood donation. Huh. I guess I have read over that question the same way I always skip the “are you pregnant” one. Hmm, time to write an e-mail to the Red Cross.

Here are the Red Cross guidelines for blood donations related to HIV.

You should not give blood if you have AIDS or have ever had a positive HIV test, or if you have done something that puts you at risk for becoming infected with HIV.

You are at risk for getting infected if you:

- have ever used needles to take drugs, steroids, or anything not prescribed by your doctor

- are a male who has had sexual contact with another male, even once, since 1977

- have ever taken money, drugs or other payment for sex since 1977

- have had sexual contact in the past 12 months with anyone described above

- received clotting factor concentrates for a bleeding disorder such as hemophilia

You're not killing the likes of Jimmy Swaggart, Newt Gingrich, nor Ted Faggard; not even Sarah FAILin for her not keeping her own kids' morals under rein (Can you say 'Bristol FAILin'? I know you can), neither.

Me, when I had an operation a decade or so ago to have a (fortunately benign) tumour removed from my rectal wall, I was told that I had a unit of blood transfused into me during the procedure. The Blood Transfusion Service in the UK, while they do tests/screening for such, is done anonymously; apart from type/compatibility, one doesn't know who receives your blood (I donate twice a year; 'Commit acts of Gratuitous Kindness', and all that jazz), one equally doesn't know who the blood you receive came from.

For all I know, that unit of blood I had could've come from a gay man. Nope, still aroused by pics of Bettie Page, and men don't interest me. I'm proof - if 'twere the case; I don't know, nor do I care - that you can't catch Teh Ghey, SadActs(IQ)5.41.

I'm still healthy, so there's your entire argument - HIV/AIDS etc - annihilated, subhuman fundie bigots. Remember: STDs & worse can be contracted from hetero sex too, so why aren't you Protestant fundies further calling for being against contraception = Popery? Jimmy Swaggart committed Adultery, and all that jazz, and he can't be the only fundie who has; can you say 'Divorce = Fornication'? Two words: Newt Gingrich.

Getting "gay blood" would not kill you. It would do exactly the opposite, keep you alive. It would not make you sick as, just with all the other blood that is used for donations, it would be screened for illnesses. The only reason you would refuse blood donated by someone who has same sex relationships is because you are bigoted and ignorant and don't want to acknowledge that gay people are as human as anyone else. But if you would really rather die than get gay cooties, bully for you.

Except for the people who have killed gay people for being gay. And the people who discriminate against LGBT people and support treating them as second class citizens which leads to the deaths of gay people. But otherwise, sure, no one's killing the gays... Just continue being "nice" to people and pretending like what you do and say doesn't hurt anyone.

Also gotta love that after the one poster says that he was hesitant to join RR because most of the delightful folks over there seem to think that gays are less than people several of the Rapturephiles express their offense at his "finger pointing" and state that they have never gotten such an impression on RR. Just. Wow. I have yet to see a post concerning GLBT people that didn't involve the vomiting emoticon or the sentiment "disgusting" and wasn't rampant with blatant queer bashing, hate, derogatory language, and homophobia.

Here's the thing: Your medication is a known quantity and not an assumption. Someone who is tested positive for HIV or Hepatitis is a known quantity. Someone with up-to-date medical information who has passed blood screening is a known quantity.

Someone whose medical history is out-of-date is an unknown quantity. Someone who was refused even blood testing is an unknown quantity. Even if you're in a category considered high risk without a full examination you are an unknown and denials are based on assumption.

A homosexual who is in a committed relationship (or even a virgin) is for some reason considered high risk and prevented from donating blood sometimes even with regular checkups and current bloodwork to present while a heterosexual who is sexually active is not automatically disqualified and not even considered as a risk despite the fact that you can catch HIV just as easily with heterosexual relationships. This is operating on pure, inaccurate, irrational presumption based on perception bias.

If all 'risk factors' were treated with such extreme prejudice you'd be banned from donating blood after the first time you hit the public pool or a private spa from risk of Hepatitis. Or if you get flu shots. Or had any extended hospital stay. Really, it's all just bullshit.

Even with more legitimate concerns for a high risk group you should not completely prevent someone with a clean medical history from donating blood if they can produce a clean bill of health from their doctor or if a clinic store blood for secondary testing. Blood donations save lives. Ignorance kills.
