Well, there are a few species that are composed of nothing but females. They have physical relations without the exchange of DNA, but they reproduce asexually.
But more likely, if a species develops so that SOME members become adults that contribute to protecting the Herd, but don’t strain resources by producing offspring, and they find a benefit from that, there’s no reason for that not to happen.

Eh. Pretty sure I and most of my kids are on the spectrum, somewhere. My granddaughter is. But some of them were born left-handed, too. It’s not a defect as much as a fact.
