Here's what I don't get-why are all the naysayers waiting until NOW to whine about it?
They're entitled to their opinion, but why didn't they protest this 50 years ago instead?

Protesting the change 50 years ago was pretty much the equivalent of protesting all the "enhanced" security measures today. 50 years ago there was the House Un-American Activities Committee, and today there's the PATRIOT Act. Only pinko Commies and their sympathizers would want God off of the currency, and only al-Kaida and other terrorists would have anything against extra security!

It might have something to do with atheists being blacklisted and, if they were important enough, being hauled up before Congress to answer for their "crime".
That whole thread is hilarious. They seem to think the poll is rigged because it was at 50/50 when they first found it, and now they're all excited that it's 60/40 in favour of keeping the slogan. Seriously, it's just a web poll -- who the hell cares?

I honestly doubt that many/any Rapturetards would have a clue who McCarthy was. I also get the impression that they think anyone left of them (which is like, everyone) is a socialist.

Because 50 years ago protesting such a thing would have gotten you labeled as a Communist and a nice thick FBI file would have been opened on you.
Don't believe me? J. Edgar Hoover opened an FBI file on Lucille Ball. Why? Because she registered to vote as a communist. Once. In 1936 . At the insistence of her grandfather.
And you wanted people to publicly protest putting "In God We Trust" on the currency, which was done essentially because of the Red Scare? Sure.
For the same reason over 90% favored more gun control right after Kennedy was shot, but a few years later thought better of it. People have unthinking gut reactions during a crisis. "In God We Trust" was put on our coins right after the Civil War, just as "under God" was added to the pledge during the early fifties communist scares.
Because 50 years ago, the ones who touted "Land of the free" were the ones hunting communists, today they hunt terrorists, tomorrow they will hunt something else, and USA will still not be anywhere close to be a land of the free.
They did you dumb fuck, but the McCarthy era was labeling atheists as communists and shipping them out to sea.
If we made open Christianity against the law, and then put "there is no god" on our money at the same time..would we be justified by saying its legit because no Christians complained at the time?
..and these people think they are being persecuted because we want to take this divisive phrase from our money?

because if they protested 50 years ago, they would've been thrown in jail for being communist. Since, you know, Communism was the whole reason "in god we trust" was added to begin with.
As long as I can still trade the coins/bills for things like food, clothing, and whatever I may need or want, it doesn't make a difference as to what my currency says.
50 years ago, I wasn't even a zygote. Hell, 50 years ago, my parents weren't alive yet.
if they protested about it 50 years ago, they would be nigh on 70 at least. my guess is that the religious doctrine that america suffered through (up until recently, is still too inaccurate a statement) had alot to do with that. people are saying it now because they havent been able to up until now.
