I still don't understand why a group of people who choose to do certain things with their bodies hopefully behind private closed doors, are labeled a "minority group" and demand tolerance.
Soooooo.....if my husband and I decide we want to dress as Ringling Brothers' Circus Clowns and have sex hanging from a trapeze in a big top, can WE have our own protected minority group?
Or how about people who like to weedwhack in pink shorts and a Hee Haw shirt? Can THEY have their own protected minority group?
Being born African-American is an example. That is WHAT you are because of WHERE you come from in your genetics. You CAN'T change THAT. I am from Mediterranean descent. I CAN'T change THAT either. THAT is a group. Gays ARE NOT a group. Because if they WANTED to they could NOT practice homosexuality.
But I can't stop being Mediterranean. An African-American CAN'T stop being an African-American.
But now behaviors qualify as a group!??!!

Why in the world do these people always stop one step short? Look, if you want to do a circus sex act, then super. You are probably in the minority, yes. And you would be protected, although you are a minority, because of your value as human beings. It's really that simple.
Do you know what happens?, that if you and your husband decide to do that, it´s just another way to spice up the old sexual act. So your point means NOTHING. Second, minority groups have nothing to do with the occasional choice of place, clothes or food preferences. It has to do with whatever leads to a social pattern which, on a permanent basis, poses a question in the way society works towards its individuals. Please, go to College before it´s too late.
Actually, yes, if you wanted to dress as Ringling Brothers' Circus Clowns and have sex hanging from a trapeze in a big top, you are a protected minority; protected for being persecuted and discriminated against or just simply beaten to death 'cause someone doesn't like it.

I'll tell you what. If some self righteous clown posse decides to follow the teachings of Bobby the dog faced boy, and believes that people who do that should be hung from the nearest tree, I'll be there for you.
Oh, but a lot foreigners choose to "act Mediterranean". You choose to have an "African culture". You choose to build Littly Italys and Chinatowns. You choose to eat your people's food, recognize holidays, and wear your people's national clothing.
And it's part of what defines cultures. A Norway without skiing, informal, grumpy people, and a fetish for the cheese slicer... just wouldn't be Norway.
"Soooooo.....if my husband and I decide we want to dress as Ringling Brothers' Circus Clowns and have sex hanging from a trapeze in a big top, can WE have our own protected minority group?" Absolutely. You'd be entitled to the precise same rights as everyone else. Happy?
I may not agree with how you and your husband dress, but I will defend to the death your right to dress that way ...
... that is, if you are ever truly persecuted for it. But it ain't going to happen, so STFU.

And of course, if christians were a minority you would not ask for any tolerance at all...
Actively engaging in homosexual activity is not what makes you a homosexual. Being homosexual is what makes you a homosexual, regardless of whether or not you are actually having sex. I am straight. I would be straight even if I was celibate. Homosexuality is not defined by activity, but by identity. An identity that can no more be "changed" than you can change your ethnicity.
And your examples are ludicrous. Your rights to have circus sex or mow your lawn in questionable fashions is already protected, and no one is trying to take those freedoms away from you.
They didn't label themselves a "minority group", the majority did the labeling. If you don't want to hear from homosexuals protesting for tolerance and equal rights, then lets label all people "People" and give them all the same rights.
What Sandman said. Homosexuality, heterosexuality, and bisexuality are ORIENTATIONS, not activities. You don't get to choose your orientation, just as you don't get to choose your handedness or your height.

If people try to mess with you for it. On a side note, I'll give you a hundred bucks if you film it.
I can empathize with this person's argument that not every minority needs to stand up and have people demand that they be labled a "minority group." To use what is probably a bad analogy, Some people prefer to own cats and others prefer dogs. It doesn't mean we need to set ourselves into groups over it.
But being gay, so far as science understands it, IS genetic and misunderstood by many people. So is mental illness. It is a genetic condition that will continue to be seen as a "minority group" until society as a whole sees fit to label it otherwise.

They didn't, until 1969, when the cops raided a gay bar in NYC and the customers, who believed the cops were using anti-gay prejudice in order to extract payola from bar owners, saw red and attacked the cops. It turned into a full-scale riot. The aftermath was the formation of the Gay Liberation Front.
You can only kick a dog so many times before he turns on you.
Here's how it works. Ask yourself, "is what I'm doing something that can be done by any group, gay, straight or otherwise?"
If the answer is, yes, then it's an act, not an identity.
Certainly, I could be celibate (and therefore not be practicing homosexuality), but I would still be gay. The opposite is true for you. This is not a hard thing to grasp.

Why would you need one? So far as I know, this would not be illegal. Kind of elaborate and somewhat expensive, but already protected by law....
So what if homosexuality is a choice?
Being a Christian is a choice. Proof: others choose differently. So if religious groups get any rights, even the right to be left alone, then the same goes for homosexuals.

If there was discrimination, yes.
Jehane, on the assumption that you're not just winding us up, the difference between kleptomania and homosexuality is that kleptomania harms another person by stealing from him or her. Gays having sex only affects the people involved and harms no one.
The majority of people who pass along STDs are male. By your reasoning, we should remove men from society.
I consider myself fairly intelligent and well-educated, and so far as I know, there are no documented ill effects from homosexual persons adopting children. Therefore I support gay adoption, since there are way too many children in need of parents in our country.
Enlightenment does not include being prejudiced or repeating slander. And any variation of "everyone knows X, so X must be true" is automatic acknowledgement that your argument is devoid of facts.
Ok, 1: a group is defined as 3 or more people (some people might say 2 or more--I won't quibble). So yes, as there are more than 2 or 3 gay people, and there is a loosely organized community of them, yes. Gays are a group.
2. Why do people use examples like this as if they are arguments ad absurdum
If circumstances dictated the necessity for a protected minority of people who like to have circus clown sex, then sure, I would support that. But circumstances neither dictate nor even imply that necessity. It is not illegal to have circus role-play sex, nor for people who like circus role-play to marry each other (even if it is well known that they intend to have circus role-play sex within the marriage). I have never heard of anybody preaching about circus role-play being the cause of all of society's problem.
If there were some need for these people to be considered "protected minorities," I would certainly support it. There is simplyl no need for it.
I nominate that they make a 'Hypocrite Dickweed Of The Month' award.
I then nominate this idiot for the award.
Oh, and to the post of that brillant bit of pagestreching:
Nice one, you stupid homophobic fuckwit.
It *astounds* me that these idiot fundies honestly think we gay and bisexual people "chose" the way we are. Why would anyone- anyone!- choose to be something that would make them the brunt of horrible 'jokes', government-sponsored discrimination, painfully cruel remarks from ignorant idiots, emotional trauma from not being accepted for who you are, and actual physical violence from crazy bigots?
This CaiperLane idiot and all the others who use this same "argument" really piss me off. I did not 'choose' to be bi- no one chooses their sexual orientation. And since these morons and their bigot friends insist on making life miserable for us and trying to take away out human rights, then hell yes we ARE a minority that deserves protection. And it's the fault of ignoramuses like this who insist on picking us out and making a big deal of us- otherwise we, like all minorities- would just be considered 'human beings', and not have to worry about being mistreated because of how we were born.
#266932: for pity's sake, just come out of the closet, honey. It's okay, we'll forgive you for your insane outbursts. As a bisexual lady, I understand how hard it is for some people to admit their true sexuality. Stop torturing yourself- IT'S OKAY TO BE GAY, you just have to admit it to yourself! *hugs #266932*
"But now behaviors qualify as a group!??!!"
Sure.
Gays are grouped by behavior. Fundies are also grouped by behavior. Hippies, greedheads, hustlers, perverts, and cretins as well.
Take a hint, CaiperLane...you CANNOT change your genetic makeup, but you CAN recover from being a total ASSHOLE, if you're MOTIVATED enough.
You can do whatever you want. After all, your husband and you benefit from all the rights and duties of society, regardless what you do in your bedroom. Gays don't, same as African American. Do you think that you can stop fancying men?, you live in a bubble, baby.
Soooooo.....if my husband and I decide we want to dress as Ringling Brothers' Circus Clowns and have sex hanging from a trapeze in a big top, can WE have our own protected minority group?
Uh, ... what do you mean "minority" here? Doesn't everybody do it this way? At least dressed in a rubber Mickey Mouse suit and hanging from the chandelier... I mean it's only normal.
Right?
Gays ARE NOT a group. Because if they WANTED to they could NOT practice homosexuality.
I betcha some of them do it in a group. Heh heh heh
the equivalent to being gay as far as your argument is that society would then not allow you to marry for having said clown sex and the places near your home would not hire you for mowing your lawn in pink shorts or whatever. that is the equivalent, not superfluous minority status, that doesn't really matter, it's the choices that society decides to randomly condemn that matter.
Let's play a game.
Picture your husband. The same guy you fell in love with all those years ago. Imagine how he looked then, what drew you to him. Maybe it was the way his eyes crinkle when he smiles, or the weird noise he makes when he sneezes. Imagine him laughing. Imagine every little thing that endears him to you, that makes him the man you love.
Now stop loving him. Do it. Right now. Just stop.
Can't do it, can ya?
And what makes you think that gays have anymore control over who they fall in love with then you do?
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
