Mao and Stalin both earnestly believed they were stabilizing their nations by rooting out oppositions (they were somewhat paranoid delusionals). Stalin and Mao opposed religion not because of atheism, but because it got in the way of them having ultimate power.
Hitler thought of himself as a messiah for the German people, and was deeply religious in his own fucked-up way. Had he succeeded, Nazism would have become the state religion.

Even if so, those people did not do atrocious things in the name of atheism. They were motivated by something else. It takes religion, or somthing like it, to make good people do evil things.

Furthermore, nobody is doubting that there have been some seriously sick bastards who were indeed atheists. So what? As others have already pointred out, there have been any number of Christians who were murderous bastards of the highest order. Just as not all non-believers are Stalin, nor do we atheists believe for a moment that every believer is Torquemada. However, many of the fundies whose blithering rubbish we read around here would love to emulate the master inquisitor by the sounds of it.

There is no evidence of any Atheistic leanings in Hitler. You can argue that he incorporated aspects of pagan beliefs into his Catholism but every Christian denomonation also does that.
American fundies are the arguably the worse for this as they appear to believe in any occult belief as a real force, maybe of satanic origions rational but still it's your beliefs that allow belief in damn near every other belief.
Stalin was training to be of the preisthood, like many who enter higher training within a religious system he lost the faith, this happens in Catholic seminaries and afterward as a in-depth study of religion usually reinforces disbelief as it's all, in the end, bullshit.
Mao just followed the Communist system which is basically to set yourself up as God, in this practice you push the competition to obediance or outlaw them. The latter being more productive as you can't trust the church, ever.
Atheism had nothing to do with what they did. Remember that Christian churchs have long led the call to war, religious intolerance and invasion. In America today many churchs still villify and call for the holy war to eliminate the Islamic nations.
