Mathematics is also great proof of God. How is it possible that:

can be figured out by carrying a digit over the top? What if that didn't work? How would we multiply without calculators?

If carrying over the one on top of the 9 did not work, how would we multiply? Seems awfully convenient to me that it "just happened" like that?

98 x 72 = 72 + 72 + 72 + ... + 72 = 144 + 144 + ... + 144, which can obviously be easily done without carrying with some persistence.

Mind you, I absolutely suck at math.

I'm a Computer Science type, so let me explain: All calculations can be reduced into a series of really really simple, but also really really freaking boring calculations.

Which is how computers do those calculations. If your computer can't do multiplication, it can do addition. If it can't do addition, it can increment. If it can't do that, it can decrement and roll-over. And if it can't do that, here's a nickel, buy a bit more computing power, it won't hurt.

7056. Didn't need a calculator. Hell I even did it in my head without taking the 10-multiple shortcut. Took me a minute, I'm ashamed to say, because something shiny nearby kept distracting me.

However, no amount of shiny in the wide universe could ever confuse me to the point where I ever say "I pick up one rock, I pick up another rock... somehow I now have two rocks... Gee how the hell does that work? God must have done it."

Not sure the fact that humans can count and do math is proof of divinity. Well, some of us can count... as well as many domesticated animals. You're kind of blowing it if you're getting one-upped by Mr. Ed and Lassie in the academic department there Self-Mutation.

Ancient Greek mathematicians. Y'know, ancient. As in pre-Biblical. They were able to determine that the Earth was spherical, when the Bible claimed as 'fact' that it was flat (the 'Firmament'; a flat 'Earth' supported on 'pillars', and all that jazz). Hell, the ancient Greeks were able to calculate with as near as dammit precision the value of Pi:

When the Bible states that Pi = exactly 3.

The Bible doesn't mention '0' or Zero. It was the ancient Mayans who invented & used 0 in their numerical system.

Thus it could be said that the Mayans laid the foundations for the Binary system, ergo computers today. QED. Algebra was even an Islamic invention.

Oh my God. This reminds me of what Leonhard Euler said to Denis Diderot, though Euler, unlike Self-Mutation here, was a genius who for some reason felt like trolling a fellow intellectual. (Probably because he was in backwards Russia at the time.)

But what Self-Mutation has just said has placed him straight in the upper echelons of stupid, together with Supersport, Cassiterides, OrangeWizard, and Garvan Ellison. The problem 98*72 is solved by carrying a digit because that is the convention that humans have come up with for multiplication. The carried digits refer to tens or hundreds, so Self here doesn't even comprehend place value. I'd like to see him multiply XCVIII and LXXII.

Wait a second, he doesn't know how to multiply two-digit numbers without calculators?! What has technology done?!?! Clearly he is an elementary-school dropout or something, or he was homeschooled by fundies who didn't bother to teach math. Ayayayayaye...

This is just to illustrate that atheists commit logical fallacies too. Logical fallacies are not reserved for religious people like the atheists always say. Atheists commit them too.

If you are true to your position of "No evidence for God" then you must also stay true to your position of "no evidence anyone is an atheist."

I have brought this up before and I did receive backpedaling from the atheists. But how many times have the atheists claimed that we theists backpedal a lot?

As a math teacher, I wept upon reading this.

There are many ways to multiply 98 * 72.

There's (98 * 70) + (98 * 2), the standard algorithm that Self-Mutation appears to be referencing.

There's 98 * 9 * 8, obtained by dividing 72 into one-digit factors.

There's multiplication a la russe, in which you halve, double, and add as follows:

72 * 98 = 36 * 196 = 18 * 392 = 9 * 794 = 4 * (1598 + 794) = 4 * 2392 = 2 * 4794 = 1 * 9598 = 9598.

All of these methods are mathematically correct, and all of them give you 9598. The only difference is the amount of time taken to solve the problem.

By the way, numbers and mathematics are artificial constructs created by human beings. Animals have no use for numbers.

@Anon-e-moose: To be fair, 3 is a reasonable approximation of pi for daily use. Even 3.14 is more accurate than you really need for construction work. Also, bear in mind that cubits were an approximate measure of length, not a standardized one: "ten cubits" and "thirty cubits" are not the same length for two different people.

Not more so than English would be, mathematics is just a human-created language. Next you'll claim that mathematics and English were created at Babel?
