The relationship of humans and apes is not based of their superficial similarities. Cigarettes and bananas are similar in a few mostly unimportant ways. To discover this for yourself, try slicing a couple of cigarettes onto your breakfast cereal. Mmmm, good.

If carefully collected you can also know the fossil's approximate age. More excavation may show evidence of it's environment and behaviors.

Indeed, there have been frauds committed by persons on both sides of this question, however, science, unlike religion, is a self-correcting process. It was other scientists who debunked Piltdown man and Nebraska man.
