If we’re going to be continually subjected to a debate over, for example, the “rights” of men who center their identity on their homoerotic desires, then it’s reasonable to begin a discussion over the many other manifestations of perverse sexual desires listed in the DSM or elsewhere.
Since we have a lot of ground to cover, let’s begin with our first paraphilia of the day, incest.
-snip-
Here are just a few basic and important questions:
How will society respond when those who practice incest start clamoring for their “rights”?
How will society respond to After the Ball-type efforts to normalize incest and demonize those who disapprove of it?
How will society respond to a future well-funded marriage “equality” effort for those in adult incestuous relationships?
If someone were to donate to an organization that lobbies against incest marriage, will this donor be fired?
Will the expression of disapproval of incest be deemed bullying or hate speech?
How will schools respond to requests to start pro-incest clubs to support students who experience incestuous feelings and who seek to come out of the incest closet? Will the Day of Silence expand to include incest?
Will therapies to help minors change their unwanted incestuous desire be banned?
Will “incest orientation” be added to enumerated anti-discrimination policies and laws?
Will the letter I be added to the LGBTQIA (etc.) abbreviation?
Will we see prime time television programs and movies with lovable incest-oriented characters?
Will incest-oriented journalists join professional journalism associations to monitor and exploit the Fourth Estate in the service of breaking down barriers and normalizing incest?
Will those who are pro-incest join “pride parades”?
Will loud and proud pro-incest people or groups “out” those who prefer to remain in the incest closet?
We’ve only just begun – we’ve got a lot more questions to ask. Join us next time as we make inquiries about another paraphilia. If America is to be truly free, shouldn’t all sexcentric-identified individuals be treated equally under the law — yes or no?

If we’re going to be continually subjected to a debate over, for example, the “rights” of men who center their identity on their fundiefapping fantasies,
How will society respond when those who practice islam start clamoring for their “rights”?
How will society respond to After the Jihad-type efforts to normalize islam and demonize those who disapprove of it?
ETC . . .
Incest is rarely a matter that begins between consenting adults, and it can lead to the birth of seriously afflicted children. In those rare instances where a husband and wife discover, years after the fact, that they are adopted out siblings, the courts should have the power to waive nullity, perhaps on condition of genetic testing or proof of sterility of one partner.

They don't construct their identity on that basis. You do it for them.
Did it ever occur to you that there isn't a large section of society out there involved in incest, and that incest isn't a normal variation of human sexuality? Apparently you're just equating homosexuality with something that people actually have a choice over.
But if you really want to get into incest, who did Adam & Eve's children procreate with, and same for Noah's children & grandchildren? What about Lot and his daughters? If you believe the bible is true, then at least a couple points in human history were big incest-fests where their descendants must have looked like the people in the movie Deliverance.
"the bible thinks some acts of incest are fine"
John Biver (sticks fingers in ears, closes eyes):"LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA! IF *I* DON'T LIKE IT, GOD DISAPPROVES!! LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA!"
Noah, his wife, their sons & their wives. And - according to the Bible - just these eight repopulated the Earth after the original population was wiped out.
...yep, I'd say that alone condones incest, and that alone equally wipes out your argument, Johnny-boy.
Romans 13:1-5. Enjoy your mega-paradox.
If they are smart, they should just let those people campaign for their rights, and then obtain their membership lists, and act according to the law.
Here's the thing: For the longest time it was legal to marry your first cousin in more American states than it would be to marry someone of the same sex. That might still be the case, actually. You ask why we're okay with one and not the other in a legal sense, but very ironically fail to ask yourself the exact same question in the exact same context.
As for the Bible incest wasn't just condoned by God he practically rewarded it as long as nobody tapped anything their dad called dibs on first. Hell I can cite a specific example for you: When Amnon raped his sister his dad was too God-fearing not to declare them married while his uncle took justice into his own hands and was severely punished by God as a result. That's right, God loves incestuous rapists so much he bitch slapped somebody for interrupting his show.
Social taboos against incest are far stronger than they are against homosexuality for a reason. Even in highly patriarchal societies, incest is a no-no: Albanian customary law says you can't marry anyone related to you within ten generations. Why? Because a) the highly affected children that result, who are often unmarriageable, affect the family's future survival and maintenance of its land; and b) forging alliances with families that have no blood ties to yours ensures that i) a non-related family will come to your assistance if you are in trouble and ii) you are not liable to fall into a property dispute with a relatively distant family. Yet some Albanian customary law tolerates homosexuality. Why? Because if there are many children, that one does not get married is not so much of a problem for the future of the family, yet it still forges alliances with other families. In modern Western societies, we also have the idea that the couple ought to be consenting adults. The rest is the kind of invention you expect to see on BarbWire.
There's always been some minor erotic activity between teen siblings, but even teens know that full sex between siblings is unacceptable, socially and for health reasons. The normalisation of incest is never going to happen, thankfully. It's just another invented sceanrio to try and justify your repulsion of homosexuality. However it is ridiculous and fails completely.
Given that I actually support the right of consenting adults to engage in sex and romantic love regardless of relation, that doesn't sound like a problem to me. Not my cup of tea, sure, but then my personal preferences are wholly immaterial to questions of legal equality. "I don't like it" isn't a valid reason for telling two adults that they're not allowed to love each other or, for that matter, to punish them when they rightly tell you to go fuck yourself and mind your own business.
Denying same sex couples their constitutional right by recognizing them as partners in civil matrimony isn't permissible because we might have to someday recognize other's constitutional rights in other circumstance.
If it is someday determined that the US Constitution's 5th amendment's guarantee of a right to substantive due process of law is found to apply to civil recognition of incestuous marriages between consanguinous consenting adults, we'll just have to bite the bullet and do so.
it’s reasonable to begin a discussion over the many other manifestations of perverse sexual desires listed in the DSM
No, it isn't, since homosexuality is NOT listed in the DSM.
@Anon-e-moose :
"according to the Bible - just these eight repopulated the Earth after the original population was wiped out."
... actually, that would explain an awful lot, especially when it comes to fundies...
Hmmm! That's interesting. So supporting something that's not wrong will lead to us supporting something that is wrong, at least when children are involved?
Or:-
I, John Biver, am striving to one day attain the intellectual capacity of a vegetable.
Plenty of incest going on in the Bible. Your argument is invalid.
As long as it's between two consenting adults, it's no one's business but theirs.
I hope this does happen.
We don't ban two people who share the same recessive genetic disorder from sex or marriage yet if they have a kid the chance of them inheriting the disease is 100%. Incest does not cause nearly that much of an increased risk.
What two consenting adults do in private is their business alone, period.
No more laws based solely off of "ew I think that's gross."
There are many states in which cousins can legally marry, and that marriage can cross state lines.
If someone involved is underage, that is legally statutory rape. We do not need to outlaw incest to prevent statutory rape, as rape is already illegal.
If someone wants to marry their sibling, I say let them. We don't do genetic enforcement for anything else, why do it for this?
However, incest is not a sexual orientation. People are known to feel attraction conditional on what gender the other person is, but I haven't heard of anyone who is specifically attracted only to close relatives. That, plus the harm argument, are good reasons to taboo incest, but not to outlaw it.

Yep, including incest. There's nothing wrong with incest between consenting adults once you get down to it. You can say "birth defects", but people at risk of having a Downs Syndrome child are still allowed to marry and have sex with each other, so there you go.
@Flanneur
Now I want to see a hentai adaption of the story of Lot.
Confused?
