Emilio is 17 months old and has a rare genetic disorder that's ravaging his central nervous system. He cannot see, speak, or eat. A ventilator breathes for him in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Austin Children's Hospital, where he's been since December. Without the ventilator, Emilio would die within hours.
The hospital contends that keeping Emilio alive on a ventilator is painful for the toddler and useless against his illness -- Leigh's disease, a rare degenerative disorder that has no cure.
Under Texas law, Children's has the right to withdraw life support if medical experts deem it medically inappropriate.
Emilio's mother, Catarina Gonzales, on the other hand, is fighting to keep her son on the ventilator, allowing him to die "naturally, the way God intended."

I dunno, this seems more sad than Fundie. It seems the woman is in pain and denial about the actual condition of her child. I think anyone here who has lost a child can say that it is not an easy thing at all.
Keeping a child in a state of suffering isn't right - but I think we should empathise with the mother, too.
When my grandfather had a stroke which left him brain dead, my grandmother told the doctors at the hospital to take him off life support, for the sole reason that she felt it was unnatural and that "he wouldn't have wanted this".
My parents and I were there, and we agreed with her.
This is a terrible dilema.
Aside from the mother not knowing the difference between natural and artificial, We also have the tragedy of a child with a fatal degenerative condition.
I am quite certain that Emilio is suffering terribly.
His mother is consumed with grief, fear and confusion. She undoubtedly wants to keep him alive out of love, But the brutal truth is that every second of his life is probably sheer agony.
I've never had to take a child off of a ventilator, but I have had to take a spouse off of one. It's not a fun thing to do, by any means. I grasped as many straws as I could and in the end, after 3 days, realized taking him off of the breathing machine was the right thing to do. Who really wants to live as a vegetable for XYZ years?
But once the mother lets go, her son is gone forever. She is hanging on to a hope that there maybe one day her son can recover. How can you call that 'fundie'? It is more sad than anything else! Have some sympathy for the mother, religion or no religion, she is having a hard time. As to those proposing a fundie 'award' for this, you are just... Disgusting!
If God had wanted him on a ventilator, he'd have created those things himself, instead of waiting for humanity to invent it!
Seriously, prolonging the child's life artificially is the aberration before nature - and therefore in the eyes of God (or so i assume. I'm not an expert of theology).
Franly, this has nothing to do with religion. She's just latching on any excuse to keep the kid alive as long as possible, because she can't bear to let him go. Very sad, but not fundy, I deem.
EDIT: Sophie beat me to it. I agree with her.
I wouldn't call her fundie...yes, her ideas are irrational, but she is facing a terrible lose and could be in denial. She could get psychological help to elaborate her grief...and maybe, the doctors could convince her to let the poor toddler rest in peace.
It would be terrible for the mother, if they disconnect her child without her consent...i hope they won't be obliged to go that far.
Pretty messed up, but not fundie. It sounds much the same as the Sun Hudson situation that was widely commented upon during the Schiavo controversy. While I gravely disagree with Ms. Gonzalez' choice regarding her son, I also feel that there is no right or point to judge her here. The Texas law is just flat out wrong here -- the family has to be involved in the choice.
Oh come on, guys, this isn't fundie, this is a mom who doesn't know how to let go of her child. The fact that she said the word "God" doesn't make her crazy. This is just sad, for all concerned.
I believe that all Christians have latent feelings of extreme sadism whenever they think they can get away with it without sinning. God always intends a painful and slow death? When it needs life support, they want to keep it. When it needs medication like stem cells, they hate it.
We need to see that all of them are sadistic monsters.
Christianity is true evil.
Captain Janeway queried:
You know what is the most interesting about this case? The religious wackjobs aren't fighting this like they did with Terri Schiavo. Could it be because her last name is Gozales?
Nah, I don't think the last name being Gonzales has anything to do with it.
I think its that, if they turned this into another Schiavo case, it would bring up the fact that Chimpie himself signed the law that allows the hospital to terminate care.
That aside, I think they consider the Schiavo case to have been a major tactical blunder on their part. The polls showed that even a majority of the religious right thought the Congressional involvement went too far. And I've heard it said that it probably cost Jeb Bush a shot at the Presidency. He was talked about as his brother's successor before that.

When my dying, suffering grandmother was on life support (a ventilator) I asked my grandfather to remove it, as it was needlessly cruel. He refused, saying it would be like pointing a gun at her head. (He was not religious.) I couldn't do anything. Anyone facing such a horrible situation might want the doctors to make heroic efforts; it's not easy to let someone you love go. This is pretty much just very sad all around.
Øyvind :
It was me from cybercafe.
Ok I went far, but...
AHY DO THEY ALWAYS ASK THE WAY MOST PAINFUL AND AGONIZING?
In every aspect of life?
No abortions, no contraceptives , no stem cells, no female equality, no free religious activity,
I hate Christianity.
"No abortions, no contraceptives , no stem cells, no female equality, no free religious activity,

I think you need to improve your knowledge of it and stop your stereotypical opinions.
And why aren't you ranting about Islam or Judaism?
A ventilator is not "naturally, the way God intended", unless there is some hope he'll be off it. Leigh's disease is an incurable genetic defect that causes major problems with basic metabolism. It usually results in the destruction of brain tissue.
Sadly, grieving people sometimes get stuck in denial.
Dying naturally, by being kept on a ventilator which is the only thing keeping him alive. Right, that makes *lots* of sense.
I understand the emotional reasons behind her actions, but her argument is stupid.
Confused?
