It is very shallow to assume that a child cannot be more mature than an adult in a distant future , human children wud hav surpassed current mans' intellect so to label underage sex as an impossibility is an insult to human abilities if dogs learnt to talk in the future, then that too wud be perfectly viable

Oh boy. Something I can answer from personal experience. Pedophiles can be very adept at a gradual form of seduction. This is often referred to as "grooming." A child in puberty can be very horny, and have no other sexual outlets. This makes a good target. The child/young adult often will not see the relationship as abusive at the time, although in my case the power trips that went along with it were all too abusive. In many cases, fear is one of the elements that bind this kind of relationship. The Pedo usually makes it clear one way or another that there will be consequences should the child tell on him.
Later in life, if the preyed-upon person is lucky, it's not the social stigma that causes emotional problems. Instead, it's the consequences of the behavioral changes owing to having a dirty little secret when one should have been living a normal childhood. Missed opportunities, etc. This is a symptom of a form of PTSD.
THAT'S why there is an age of consent, and that's why Pedophiles are sexual predators.

The "side effects" are both physical and mental, and include pregnancy, disease, and the inability to form other relationships that can lead to a sex life with a loving and stable partner instead of a sex life with a pedophile....whose proclivities will lead him to a younger partner when the first one "ages out" of his preferred range.
In short, iqzerohelluvachristian, if you are the pedophile, your best option is to get castrated by an angry ferret. If you are the prey of that pedophile, please tell your parents, tell your teachers, tell the cops, and lock the damn door.
Even considering some people can mature younger than others, 10 years old is too young.
If such a person was truly mentally or emotionally mature enough, they'd still be physically immature.

WTF! WTF! WTF! Ten year olds are not mature enough to have sex. It doesn't matter whether they've been given the most comprehensive sex education out there. They do not have the cognitive ability to understand what having sex means.

I'm willing to concede that there might be /some/ 10 years old children that are capable of giving meaningful consent to sexual activity -- as in "In the entire world, there might be 10-20 such individuals alive at any given time".
If you feel that you belong in this group, then:
1) I assume you are graduating high school this year -- congrats!
However, the enormous majority (99.99999%) of 10 years old's aren't in this situation, and it makes sense to design the law so that the 'easy' path is "10 year olds can't consent" rather than the reverse.
