Stein says that as mayor, Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. "She asked the library how she could go about banning books," he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. "The librarian was aghast." That woman, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn't be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire Baker for not giving "full support" to the mayor.

If it's true, it's scary. I hope it isn't rue, but wouldn't be surprised if it is.
Well, Newspeak anyone? Fahrenheit 451? Respond quickly, before we run out of ways to express ourselves.
When Libraries are under attack and Librarians threatened with being fired by politicians, it's only a step to book-burning. And the mindless and ignorant will surely revel in it. Democracy itself is actually being threatened but such. But religion does not approve of democracy or freedom of thought. It is founded, as we know it, on mind control.
Check your freedom/democratif deficiency, America!
Them goddamn li-barians, always gettin' in the way uv trooth! down here in the south, we gott us a way of takin' care of 'em; we lynch 'em with them niggers. Them good, gawd-fearin' folks in Lasker shud lern frum us.
Books with bad language and violence! Can't have that, can we?

Fucking fundies. Do they all have to be braindead?!

EDIT: Oh, and as a former librarian - yay for censorship.
fuck a duck
Obama, although you're inexperienced, you know enough that you can't enforce your belief system on others. Oh, and you know the difference between sunnis and shiites, unlike mccain.
That's it. Voting for either Obama or the independent candidate. Not that I didn't want to before now, but this makes it clear Palin is not my idea of who should be VP. Besides, I can't support someone who would burn books just because they have foul language or sexual content in them.
Voting for either Obama or the independent candidate.
I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but in our crappy, effed up voting system here in the US a vote for a third party ends up being a net gain for the greater of two evils.

Don't fucking remind me. I wish our system was more like the one they have in the UK. That being said, I'm still glad there is the option of an independent candidate at all.
I know I'm not the only one who read this and instantly thought NAZI
I question the sanity of anyone who read the quote and DIDN'T think there was something wrong.
Just what we need -- another petty autocrat in power. Between McCain's temper and Palin's sense of entitlement, we'd be screwed.
/Bob Barr for President -- he'll screw McCain and flip the election to Obama.
Sooze:"Can't people who don't like the books JUST NOT READ THEM?! '
It's not enough not to read them. They don't want anyone else to read them also.
That's not quite the case. They don't care what random people read (after all, they are commie atheist liberal Muslim homosexual pagans, and are going to hell anyway). This authoritarian impulse stems from two things:
1. The fundies don't want their children to be exposed to evil outside ideas.
2. They are fucking lazy, and don't want to expand the (ever-growing) effort to give their children this sort of "protection". Thus, they want the government to do it for them.
Funnily enough, this is exactly what they protest when they screech about welfare. I love pointing this out to them.

Shhh! The Lib Dems can hear you, you'll upset them!
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
