I have always had a theory that the reason that America is not mentioned in the Bible is because God wanted America to stay a secret until it was finally to be discovered in 1492 or so.

Yeah...very likely story.
It couldn't be that it was written from the perspective of people who had no idea of, and thus made no mention of, anything beyond their ancient Middle-eastern region of readily observable reality? Nah...what with all the mentions of Australia, and Antarctica, and the frequent references to England and Russia (excluding "Magog", or whatever).
"I have always had a theory that the reason that America is not mentioned in the Bible is because God wanted America to stay a secret until it was finally to be discovered in 1492 or so."
Secret? Except to the natives who'd lived there for twenty thousand years or so, right?
I love the fact that he says "or so". He isn't sure about the 1492 date.
The fact that Scandinavians discovered it almost 500 years before doesn't even enter into the equation, and apparently he's counting native americans as non-entities.
I really hope that this guy (or woman) spouts his/her shit in the wrong place one day and gets murdered by a pack of angry indians.
He says "America," not "the Americas" or "North America." Even though this distinction is probably beyond Fundies, I assumed that because of this, he meant the United States.
If you read it that way, it's much, much funnier.
Why would America be important to God, anyway? Aren't all the little bible stories taking place in the Middle East area? "Let's mention somewhere that has no bearing on the story, that's great storytelling."
Plus all the things also wrong with what you said (1492, Bronze Age, etc.) that everyone else already said.
Hmmm yeah, I see your point. Say, would you be a pal and .. hand me that pistol ??? ... Thanks, I'M FUCKING OUT OF HERE, SEE YA !!!
*BANG*
Since when does the bible tell everyone about everything? Theres no mention of the czech republic, nazi germany, Paula-neil mill johnston of redbridge, Super man, Godzilla, Microwaveable burritos, smack, banana boats, bob sled teams, ebola virus, Jack frost, Dinosaurs, Montezuma, Yi Sun Shin, Walkmans, Those thing you lick press down and then later on they go ping and oh I forgot about those, plumbing, penguins, antarctica, blue whales, bacteria, gyrocopter, Potato Chips, micro filements, aurora borealis and australis, tropics of capricorn and cancer, the great southern cross, jesus left earlobe, in fact all of jesus' appearance, NFL NAB NHL, Robotics and the the length and width and even the existence of the galaxy.
no you people are missing the point. Dani D is simply saying that Indians didn't actually live in America until Columbus reached land. Then God waved his hand and made it look like they had lived their a long time so Columbus could have some people to rape after being on a ship for a long time.
God, can't you people follow simple logic?
Hah!
And how many other things he wanted to be a secret?, evolution, for example?, the dinosaurs?.............and better, if he's so secretive why taking the Bible literarilly?
First off... There were humans living on the American continents long before Columbus. Thousands and thousands of years before biblical times even.
Second. The first known european to "discover" North America was Leif Eriksson (well, actually Bjarne Herjolfsson, but he never got off the boat). There are writings and findings that indicate that the norse were in the regions of Labrador and New Foundland about 500 years before Columbus.
The people who wrote the Scriptures that became the Bible didn't know about Europe, Russia, Asia, New Zealand, Australia. The whole "not having the technology" for the trip HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT, AMIRITE?
Septic Sceptic: "I just picture god throwing a sheet over North America and flicking boats of explorers away with his finger :"Don't look! It's not ready yet!""
I think Dani is confusing the Bible with The last continent from Pratchett.
So we can sneak attackalize them from our privatatory parts, heh, heh, heh,
George W. Bush
ROFLMAO @ Sceptic Sceptic re: "Don't look! It's not ready yet!".
You sir, are made of WIN. *hands you the internet*
I have always had a theory that people who post on Rapture Ready are a bunch of deluded wankers.
See? I can come up with theories, too. Only difference is, mine is proven correct on a daily basis.
Wow. God then obviously didn't keep only America secret, but also huge other parts of the world (huge parts of Africa, Asia, whole Oceania, Antarctica and the Arctic, North and South America, and a lot of Europe). Is India mentioned in the bible? Is scandinavia mentioned in the bible? Are the canary islands mentioned in the bible? Iceland? Japan? Falkland Islands? New Zealand? Scotland? Germany? (only to name a few) All of them "secret" parts of the world, as of this fundie?
And nearly all of them already inhabited when the bible was written.
Or by Leif Eriksson and his Viking crew somewhere around 1000. But as people had been living there for thousands of years by then, I guess God didn't manage to keep the secret for very long, or only kept it a secret for his "chosen people".
Or, ya know, his chosen people didn't know about the Americas, Europe, the Far East or Oceania, and could therefore not mention them in the story they created in order to control the masses.
America was discovered some 10,000 years ago by Asians crossing the Pacific Landbridge chasing after elk.
Europeans discovered America in the 12th Century.
Just because white people did it, doesn't mean they did it first.
To quote James Joyce:
"Christopher Columbus, as everyone knows, is honoured by posterity because he was the last to discover America."
But I had to chuckle at "1492 or so "!
Confused?
