The man who said the world was going to end appeared at his front door in Alameda a day later, very much alive but not so well.
"It has been a really tough weekend," said Harold Camping, the 89-year-old fundamentalist radio preacher who convinced hundreds of his followers that the rapture would occur on Saturday at 6 p.m.
Massive earthquakes would strike, he said. Believers would ascend to heaven and the rest would be left to wander a godforsaken planet until Oct. 21, when Camping promised a fiery end to the world.
But on Sunday, almost 18 hours after he thought he'd be in heaven, there was Camping, "flabbergasted" in Alameda, wearing tan slacks, a tucked-in polo shirt and a light jacket.

What a tweest! Well, actually, no, not really.
In all fairness, he did say that the end of the world would actually occur on October 21, but the rapture would "definitely" happen on May 21. Now he's claiming that the rapture & end of the world will happen on the same day, Oct. 21. So we get to throw another doomsday party then.
The assholeish part is that Camping said that he won't give his followers who spent all their money anything to help them out. He said, "people cope." Kind of remniscient of "Let them eat cake." He was correct in that he didn't tell anyone to spend all their money, but he now needs to take responsibility for what these people did based on his prediction. It would, after all, be the Christian thing to do. But when have you ever seen a rich Christian help anyone out?
And yet, for some unfathomable reason, people haven't sued Harold Camping's lying ass off the damn planet yet.
I guess there's no end to the BS that some people are willing to swallow.
Well, gosh, who would've guessed?
And of course he's not going to give a care for the deluded people who spent all their money/gave up their homes/whatever because the "rapture" was gonna "for sure" happen. Gawd never gives you more than you can handle, riiight??
I'm flabbergasted that you had the balls to appear in public at all, given how public your "prediction" got, and how many people you actually duped.
Are you gonna do anything to help the folks who spent their own money to get your message across? Don't tell me--let me guess--the answer is no, am I right?
Harold Camping sounds like he plagiarized Jehovah's Witnesses.
Jehovah Witnesses are a spin-off of the second Adventist which all came from the Millerite movement.American war of 1812 army captain William Miller is ground zero for Jehovah's Witnesses.
Yes,the "great disappointment" of Oct 22 1844 has never died out... it lives on in the Jehovah's Witnesses.
The central CORE doctrine of the Watchtower, yes the reason the Watchtower came into existence was to declare Jesus second coming in 1914.When the prophecy (derived from William Miller of 1842) failed they said that he came "invisibly".
Watchtower reckless predictions of the (1914) (1975)..... second coming of Christ hardens skeptics in their unbelief and provides new fodder for cynics to mock the Christian faith.

Danny Haszard been there
Actually, the volcano Grimsvötn on Iceland had an eruption on the 21st of May. The cloud of ash threatened the air traffic in Europe for quite a few days.
(Not as much or as long as Eyafjallajökull, about a year ago, but still...)
Maybe that was what he was picking up "vibes" on?
After all, this ash-cloud was probably just as "world-wide" as the "flood" in the Bible was. Or even more so...

Yeah, imagine that. The world didn't end and billions didn't die horrible, painful death then get sent to eternal torture in hell by your "loving" god.
Rough day.
It's terrifying to think about how the fundie mind works. They are so self deluded that they simply can't comprehend conflicting evidence, even when it is presented right in front of them.
It reminds me far too much of 1984, particularly the concepts of Doublespeak and Newspeak. Anything outside their scope of thought they simply define it to literally not exist.
I also recall from 1984 when a speaker was condemning the nations enemies and received word that the two other nations had swapped alliances, and he changes his condemnation in *mid sentence* without blinking an eye. Sounds a lot like fundie rationalizing doesn't it?
