As someone who volunteers at a dog shelter on a weekly basis, often with pit bulls, I can say that their owners' treatment matters as much if not more than their actual breed. I have laid down in their kennels and used them as pillows before. They give me kisses. It's a matter of how you take care of them.
It's the owner not the breed. To use your logic
I saw a Christian be violent. All Christians should be put down
I saw a Muslim be violent. All Muslims should be
Pagans
atheists
Left wingers
Right wingers
Basically just fucking kill all humanity. Because some are violent.
@Titania
Small pooch syndrome? Yeah, in all my experiences with dogs, that's kind of a decent rule of thumb to go by. There are exceptions, but, generally, I've found that bigger dogs are more friendly.
I'd even say, I know humans that applies to.
Yes Pit Bulls can be nice, says people who are attacked after years of owning them (not smart assing, this is widely reported)
Even then though I agree it may not entirely be the dog breed. Assholes get nasty dogs because they're assholes, so a Pit Bull, Doberman or aggressive German Shepard may say more about your demeaner.
Like Hummers. Years ago the rate of accidents surged ten percent in Canada over to SUV and 4WD trucks. Records showed it was almost entirely related to Hummers. An expert report said they saw Hummers in more incidents than any other factor: reason 1) poor visibility due the windows and height 2) false sense of security and 3) Hummer owners are jerks. This largely applies to aggressive dog ownership as well, too many cowardly ass people that should consider leaving the planet before getting a loud troublesome animal they quit paying attention to in a couple months.
Pit Bulls CAN be good safe dogs.
Do you depend on others putting the effort into it?
Anti-pit fundies are bizarre, they can believe the most outlandish things. Many dogs should not be in a dog park setting. Someone should know if their dog is dog aggressive before letting them loose. I knew someone who adopted a fox terrier that was very dog aggressive and it took many months of training and working with her before she could be taken for walks without a muzzle. This dog could easily kill a puppy or a toy breed.
Pits have been bred to fight other animals, unfortunately. However, they have not been bred to be aggressive toward people, just the opposite. When dogs are fighting the handlers do not want to be bitten or mauled. Pit-types are responsible for a disproportionate number of maulings because there are so many of them and they are the "popular" dogs kept by irresponsible people who want them as guard dogs, or to be intimidating accessories, and they do not train, socialize or house the dogs properly. These dogs are too often neglected and abused/fought.
If someone wants to have all pit-type dogs banned or put to sleep, then other large dogs would also be in the crosshairs. The German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Mastiff, Chow Chow, Doberman Pinscher etc. were bogey-dogs before the pit bulls got the spotlight. None of them are "vicious" dogs, but if they are not raised and trained properly by capable people they can cause real damage. Providing communities with low cost veterinary services is one way to combat the "pit bull problem." The pit-type dogs that are responsible for mauling people are by and large unaltered males-- not socialized family pets. And spaying/neutering helps with the overpopulation problem, of course.
I've never been attacked by any dog and I've been around a lot, but people attack people, animals attack people...you can find an incident of anything attacking anything else. The whole planet should therefore be destroyed according to this logic.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
