Maybe it's a phase, maybe it's not. There's no harm in calling the kid by the name the kid desires.
If Thomas wants to be called Tommy at seven, that's fine. Tammy is fine too.
If he's trans, then it's only proper for her to grow up in the way that inflicts the least psychological distress: as a girl. If he's not trans, then he can switch schools when this phase is over, return to being a regular boy and there's no harm in it. Maybe it'll even help him relate to women better as an adult.

If she is trans, and her parents are supportive of her transition, then it's the start of a good life. It's a hell of a lot better than being forced to be something she's not. :)

Personally, I don't see how another person's change of gender effects me, but maybe that's because I'm not a fundamentalist.
And I would like to know more about this case other than the small snipet I read. If the boy is just going through a phase, that's okay. And if he really wants to be a transgendered person, that's okay too. But of course, not everyone else will see it that way.

As for the OP, I'm not sure I'd want my kid going to school dressed up as a girl, not because I care about transgenderism, but I do care about my kid getting the shit kicked out of him, singled out by teachers, etc. I'd probably let him dress up at home and explain that there's a lot of people out there who would treat him mean if he goes to school like that. And martial arts may not be a bad idea.

The kid may just be going through a phase. When I was a kid I hated dresses, makeup, and I ran around dressed more like a boy. Do my parents deserve to be sterilized?

So, we've got another case of a poor child that was born a girl but through the fun factory of life was instead endowed with the physcial body of a boy. Or some variation thereof. Be glad you'll never have to experience such a thing yourself, and leave the blameless child alone.

However, I would encourage the parents to see a child psychologist with their child to help determine if this is a phase or there are real transgender issues here. If this is a phase, it may be very difficult to return to being a boy, after going public with this. On the other hand, if this is a case of transgenderism, it is better to deal with it now rather than later. Being just 7 or 8 years old, I don't know if a child can make that decision.

Still, there are a lot of people out there who believe this, and it's sad.
It is almost certainly *not* a "phase". Just like gay ppl, transgender ppl usually know v early and do not change. She (and I will use that pronoun) is best enrolled where she is unknown and can use the girls' toilets - in a cubicle, other girls will not notice. Likely bullying is no excuse in any case - "sissy boys" get bullied anyway, and the way to deal with it is to work hard to put a stop to it, as the school appears to be doing.
If the kid wants to dress as a girl, the kid should be allowed to dress as a girl. Plus, the commenter is basically admitting s/he's a troll with the name.

As others agree, transgender=okay. I would like to ask this person if they are aware that the USA has had a nasty history of forcibly sterilizing people. I had no idea that anybody was *proud* of this history. Eugenics is wrong, because if negative traits are genetic their prevalence will be reduced naturally.
