First one: Mental illness or not, it is still painful to feel like you are a member of a sex that you are physically not, and that it is socially unacceptable for you to behave as. And, I am not quite certain how the taxpayers are involved in such a surgery, or that such surgeries are common enough for you to bitch about them. Also, just because they disgust you personally does not make them inherently wrong.
Second one: transgender and homosexuality are not synonymous, and homosexuality stopped being considered a mental illness over 50 years ago. If anyone is lacking in tact and judgment, I have two guesses, and they have nothing to do with your Canadian leaders...
I'm fucking proud our country pays for this therapy for those who need it. We all start out as female, and sometimes the process of genderization or whatever gets screwed up. Oh how evil we are, to alleviate suffering and bring happiness into sad lives.
Which professionals? Names, please, and the studies they did to make their determinations would be good, too.
Homosexuality is not a mental illness. Hell even Freud thought we were all naturally bisexual and that homo/hetro sexuality was caused by environmental factors. It was removed from the DMV in 1973.
And I have no problem with Ontario covering this, other than it plays into other issues I have with the medical system.

I worked in a mental hospital for five years and homoesexuality was not a mental illness. If we got a gay patient, we would help him/her live with what they are. Many of the staff were gay too.
Sex change operations are state funded. One's gender is not dependant on the body one is stuck with. The state does make it hard to get a sex change operation for good reason. It is not a trivial matter changing one's sex.
Too bad god makes so many mistakes when he is creating us. Wrong gender or wrong sexual orientation. Sounds like god is a complete screwup.

So if people are mentally ill and wish to change their sex to feel comfortable with their bodies, and the only way you can treat them is to go along with the operation, then wouldn't it be unethical to withhold said treatment?

being Transgendered first let me clarify this, it is NOT a mental illness it is a mental disorder 2 distinctly seperate categories, and least here in the states most insurance companies do not cover the surgery whis is about 20K not counting the minimum reguired 1 year of therapy with 2 seperate pschologist. As to your other point of it being disgusting to you all I can say is human ignorance is very disgusting to me and thankfully for the fundamentalist I can't get it made illegal
