Think of it like this though, if the government put most of those drugs into circulation, and then taxed the population to fight a fake drug war, surely they make more money than they would if said drugs were made legal? Because if they were legal, anyone could manufacture them, just without the risk of going to jail.

Tobacco is legal. I can't just grow my own and sell loose leaves or cigarettes.
Booze is legal. I can't just whip up some hooch and throw it in a bottle to sell at the local market.
Being legal and being commercially viable for the average citizen are two different things. Legalize drugs and corporations would grow, process and sell them. Same as it ever was. This conspiracy theory is somewhat stupider than the average one.
It's not that crazy people. On a local level, cops tend to wait for dealers to sell all their product before they try to arrest them. That way, they get a mountain of cash they can use, rather than a mountain of drugs that they can't use.

Well yeah but also because it's easier to get an arrest for sale or trafficking if they actually have evidence of sale or trafficking.
Uh, pretty much all the illegal drugs started out as legal drugs. Cocaine and the opium derivatives like morphine, laudanum and heroin were all legal, over the counter drugs up until around 1914. They were banned or regulated to prescription-only status because their highly addictive qualities caused a lot of social problems.
+1 on Gabriel LaVedier, with one addendum.
citizens CAN grow their own tobacco or brew their booze. it is well-regulated and the taxes for growing a controlled substance (litteraly speaking for tobacco) are prohibitive to say the least. concerning selling it, why do you think micro-brews are expensive? it's not the raw materials, it's the paperwork and taxes.
oh, and if megacorps actually sold their cannabis, purity and quality would be enforced. trust me, you don't know what's in those 10 grams of hash you just bought. i think a few european countries thought about it to help addicts with their life. dying of the drug instead of the drug's byproducts. you can cure addiction, you can't cure powdered glass in the lungs (or worse)
This person is going to be pissed when he realizes the government tends to be a bunch of uptight Leave it to Beaver-ites who are afraid of drugs.
As for me, I'm for drug legalization and like the war on terror it gives the government some power it shouldn't have. But the government isn't dealing those controlled substances. Well, there are a few people still left over who get medicinal marijuana, but Obama's been pretty bad towards marijuana in general.
Also, Apatheist, if they wait for them to sell the drugs, they can charge them with more than if they just had the drugs. They can still get them for drug possession, and then they can pile on distribution as well.
Every sale is a potential trafficking conviction. Plus they can get a list of junkies who might turn in their other sources.
Letting a dealer sell some of their drugs before the arrest is just smart strategy.
Confused?
