Ummm, no, it doesn't. If it did, the athletes would be openly competing for their religion, walking into the arena during the opening ceremonies waving a religious flag.

If he won 8 bronze medals or was disqualified for some reason you'd say he was obviously not a Christian and was being punished by Gawd. Now that he's won 8 gold medals you're still questioning if he's Christian. Would Gawd let some heathen bastard win 8 gold medals? I think not.

Yeah, sure. It doesn't matter that he has a natural aptitude and an obvious dedication to sport and his own personal goals. What matters is the particulars of his superstition, because obviously that's what enables him to be one of the world's finest athletes.
Besides, I think it's obvious that if he has a deity, it's part of the Olympian pantheon.

Umm..I thought the olympics were played to honor Zues, Hercules, and the pantheon..not Jesus. In fact, when the olympics were first played, Jesus had yet to be invented by humans
When prayer is an Olympic sport, I'll give this a second thought. But as it stands, what matters here is that Michael Phelps is a phenomenal athlete, who could likely outperform any member of RR, or hell pretty much anyone in the world. Deal.

Well, he's got ADHD, and we all know from demonbusters that means he's possessed... so, I'm guessing then, by fundie logic alone, he's not saved. I mean, come on, he came from a broken family as well!

And thus we see the draw of religion to the petty and small-minded - they can pretend that it doesn't matter than Michael Phelps is so much more successful than they are because believing in God, something that requires no effort to do, makes them superior.
Because if he's not that somehow invalidates all of his Olympic achievements?
I'd say if he isn't it would prove your god doesn't make people win at sports but I'm sure you'll come back with "he must have made a pact with Satan" or some crap so let's save everybody's time buy not even bothering to ask.
No, what really matters is that he is (or was, he is now retired, I think) a phenomenal athlete and the most successful Olympian ever. He is/was also a great sportsman in every other sense of the word.
Who gives a fuck about his religion? However, I doubt very much that he is a Christian in the fundie sense. None of that lot could achieve one percent of what Phelps has.
