Britain is the most Godless socialist collective I have ever visited and that includes the former USSR Albania Romania and even Holland which is another socialist nightmare. But the UK is the only nation which has a motto Dieu et Mon Droit and a Monarch which is Supreme Governor of the Church of England and a government which actively persecutes Christians (try refusing homosexuals anything they want!) - so the article is not even close to the problem. The country is on its knees now in every sense except the only one which will save it.

- More's the pity, but at least we have her where she should be, at arms length as a powerless figurehead

Actually, I believe Britain is still nominally and legally a very religious country, but, then again, we're also still nominally and legally a monarchy. There's little practical adherence to either of those principles any more, though - in terms of actual functionality, we're a secular, representative democracy.

It's just a stuffy peculiarity of the British psyche (with exceptions, like myself) that it would be unthinkable to actually acknowledge either of those things officially. Since both monarchy and state religion are fading into obscurity and irrelevance on their own, I suppose nobody sees any point in wasting effort trying to bring about a foregone conclusion - we know it's going to happen before long, with such unconscious certainty that most of us live our lives as though it already did. Ironically, such apathy probably hastens their decline more than any active effort would.

Now that I come to think about it, I wonder if Terry Pratchett was alluding to something like this with Queen Keli in Mort - or maybe I'm reading way too much into it.

And speaking as a Brit - a left-wing Atheist Brit - I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

And you're not even close. Been living under a rock for the past few decades? Homosexuality in the UK was legalised in 1967. There's been Civil Partnerships for years now. And our police have the most savage Zero Tolerance policies against Hate Crimes of any kind in Europe.

And yet, when Dumbya was wanting support for his invasion of Iraq, who was he begging on his hands & knees to, for backing? Tony Blair. The (then) Prime Minister. Of the UK.

Your country was on it's knees in every sense, except for the only one who'll save it: President Barack Obama, repairing the unholy mess created by your God Emperor of Fucking Up, George Dumbya Bush, and restoring the USA to what it should be: the bastion of Freedom - for all people - as based on the Constitution that is it's foundation.
