How is a sign that says "There is no God, just be good for goodness' sake" any different than the countless signs plastered all over the place spreading religious messages? In fact, it's much less offensive than the "Believe or go to hell!" messages we see everywhere. Is it really so bad to suggest that we be nice to each other for the sake of being nice?

Even Zentraedi who have assimilated into human society (in the "Macross" series, especially the latest, Frontier), have joined in with human traditions & holidays. But the early Christian church, with no traditions of it's own, basically stole those of pagans. Oh how Xtians forget the moral foundations of their beliefs, the 10 Commandments. Specifically the eigth: 'Thou shalt not STEAL'. And that's what you Xtians have done, you've stolen a pre-Christian festival and made it your own. Thus the above macro with Klein Klan is very appropriate to the quote.

They don't. Christians can honor Christ any time they want. Lawsuits only happen when fundamentalist Christians try to get the government to join in on the honoring. What really bothers Glory is that the lawsuits are usually successful.

lol! Some xtians say that April 1st was jesus' real birthday and the evil people of society made that day April Fool's in order to discredit him by referring to him as the fool. I recall an ex-friend (who was a fundie b.a.c and is now a fundie baptist) saying that the reason we use the symbol of the fish is to mock jebus... So, in fact, sorry that day has been declared (by me) as "jesus, if he existed, was a fool" day. I'm thinking, for us atheists, of an International Humanism Day...

Christmas is originally a pagan festival: Dies Natalis Solis Invicti - The Birthday of the Unconquered Sun. So why are you bitching when your lot stole it.

The reason Christianity announced Christmas was on December 25th was to convert pagans. The pagan Solstice holiday, Yule, falls around that same time every year (give or take a day). The Christians did the same things to their holy spots and altars, by building their churches over the pagan sacred space. It was much easier to convert pagans when they were going to celebrate roughly the same holidays and worship in their accustomed places.
What burns me the most is that Christianity boo-hoos over being oppressed by everyone that isn't like them. Cue the WAAAHmbulance.

As for the atheist placard: Freedom of speech doesn't just go one way -or it really wouldn't be freedom.
Funny, in this case there were no lawsuits--not even one--just a properly filed request to display one little sign. A request that pretty much had to be granted because if that request had been denied, out goes the Nativity display and the menorah (which isn't actually there yet but is expected to be put up) and out goes the big, beautiful "Holiday" tree that everybody loves so much. The government can't play favorites. And the only 'cry babies' and 'troublemakers' are the fundies, whose faith is apparently so weak that it is threatened by the least little whisper of disagreement.
It's public space. Get over it. That little atheist sign is protecting your right to display your chosen symbols, too.
