I've said it before, and I'll say it again. John Lennon was suggesting that the fact that being able to imagine these things so easily was a bad thing.
"Imagine no possessions / I wonder if you can" doesn't sound like something Lennon would really celebrate.

I don't know the song, but it sounds like a pretty good idea to me. If the devil (another mythological creation) is really behind it and he manages to succeed, he will have done a much better job than your god ever has, or will.
