[Why is it okay to bow to the Pope and not the King of Saudia Arabia?]

You bow to the pope to show respect for his compassion and dignity as a great person. You don't bow to someone who beats women and uses hordes of religious police to murder and flog people who don't close up shop during prayer time to pray to the opium addicted, boy loving plaything of an older whore!

The Vatican is no Bahrain thats for sure.

What makes this Pope such a compassionate and dignified person? I know just this side of nothing about the guy but I don't recall hearing him do much of anything other than keeping AIDS spreading like wildfire in Africa.

While I have no problem with reverence for a position or office I'll be damned if I'm going to kiss the ass of the person whose in it just because they happen to be sitting in the Big Chair. This goes for Presidents as well as Popes. Respect is earned, not won in elections.

Read up on your Church history. I'll bet you'd still think it was a pretty good idea to bow to any Pope in history, no matter their atrocities, right?

The Vatican is an old guy in a funny hat and a bunch of guys in robes pacing around like they've got some sort of special knowledge and should be exalted because of it. Then there's the Swiss Guard who look like they were dressed by a demented Jester...

In other words, the Vatican is entirely irrelevant.

Would this be the same "great person" that was, at the very least, partially responsible for sheilding pedophiles in the priesthood from prosecution, and shuffling them around to different dioceses, thus endangering more children.

Then why bow to the pope? The only reason you have taken offense is because of your personal sense of religious superiority. Traditional diplomacy mandates that a head of state should greet another in the manner in which they are accustomed. Do you honestly think, for even a moment, that Bush never bowed down to the Saudi King?

And neither is Saudi Arabia. There is nothing that makes the pope any greater of a person than the saudi king save for your own religious prejudice. It's as simple as that, you're a bigot with an agenda to defame a president who you don't like.

You know nothing of diplomacy or diplomatic etiquette beyond your crude ideas of "'Merica Rulz" and "Christianity uber Alles", So please, if only to spare yourself futher embarresment, quit acting as if you do..

the american government has been "bowing to the King of Saudi Arabia" for almost 2 decades (or even more) so to speak.
So if you want to blame Obama for upbholding dilomatical etiquette towards the ruler of a country that was even considered by the 2 Bushes to be the greatest ally of the USA in the mid east, you fail.

Maybe instead of Obama you should blame american foreign policies, which, during the entire cold war (and up till now) based their behavior towards foreign countries not on their human rights record almost entirely on the question whether the country was communist or not and whether it would be of use for the USA to uphold good realtions.

Remember Iraq? Maybe you should also remember that during the 80s this country (with its Ruler Saddam) was a close ally to the USA, even after it became known that the Iraq used poison gas against civilians ;)
Very probably the USA would still support an Iraq under Saddam Hussein, if the sowjet rule in russia hadn´t collapsed in the 80s and the USA would still wage a cold war against the UDSSR (which would still make Iraq an useful ally against an Iran which was backed by the UDSSR)
