I have had an unbelieving brother have a visceral reaction to a discussion about God and what happens when we die and an unbelieving sister go ballistic over just the mention of the bible.
My sense is that deep down they both know God is real, and that there is a judgement coming. They surround themselves with others who validate their atheism so they don't have to deal with any conflict in this area in their daily lives. But when the topic surfaces and the Truth is mentioned, there is a deep negative reaction because the Truth registers somewhere deep inside and I think they can't deal with the reality of that Truth. So they strike out at the messenger. I have been so surprised as well at the intensity of the attacks.
Only the bible, and the name of Jesus and God as creator bring about those kind of reactions. False religions and spiritual ideas don't seem to bother people, and they don't create those reactions. Just the Truth. They don't want to hear the Truth. Its a deliberate choice to reject the Truth whether they realize it or not.
I had another family member reject the Truth recently, and I have been down about it too. I get discouraged as well. However I heard the scripture in my heart where Jesus says, "They are rejecting me, not you." And that just makes me want to cry - both for Jesus and for them. I wish they knew what we know and would say YES to Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
[[So people get sent to hell for not having come across certain 'knowledge?']]

Truth, truth, truth, truth, truth
Keep repeating it until you begin to believe it yourself.
"False religions and spiritual ideas don't seem to bother people, and they don't create those reactions."
Go to YouTube and look up Desertphile. This guy makes videos calling Scientology a "crime syndicate."
Look up patcondell. He makes several videos that criticize (that's putting it mildly) Islam.
And there are others like them.
But deep down, you know that the Celestial Teapot is real.
"Its a deliberate choice to reject the Truth whether they realize it or not."
Maybe you won't shut up about it... They have to hear this crap about "the Truth" every day.
"Its a deliberate choice to reject the Truth whether they realize it or not."
How does that work? If they don't realize it, how can it be deliberate? Do you even think about what you're saying?
If someone were trying to cram other religions and spiritual ideas down my throat, I'd probably blow up at them. As it is, Mormons and JWs interrupt my dinner, god fearing conservatives hijack government, and fundies kill off acres of trees to fill up my recycler with hatred and puce.
"My sense is that deep down they both know God is real"
I bet that when your partner gets home tired after a day of work, you "sense" that they want to hear some constructive criticism about how clean the house is.
"I have been so surprised as well at the intensity of the attacks."
You should feel joy that you are allowed to share in the persecution of your Saviour.
"Only the bible, and the name of Jesus and God as creator bring about those kind of reactions."
But it's safe to say Snickers and New Jersey?
"They don't want to hear the Truth."
If God didn't make people like that, Jack Nicholson would have no one to rail against. They're all part of the Divine Plan.
"Its a deliberate choice to reject the Truth whether they realize it or not."
That makes no sense, because they can't deliberately reject something if they don't.. Oh, why bother. You are a loony, whether you realize it or not.
"However I heard the scripture in my heart where Jesus says, "They are rejecting me, not you."
You're mistaken in what you think your heart sounds like. That wasn't a stethoscope, it was an IPod playing a bible reading. Now that you know that, you'll stop hearing Britney in your heart too.
"Only the bible, and the name of Jesus and God as creator bring about those kind of reactions."
1. Not true. Is no one in the US up in arms over Islam these days??
2. Ever think maybe your religion is exceptionally avoidant of acceptance?
No, they go ballistic because they are sick to death of people like you constantly prattling on and on ad nauseum about your religion.
And why the hell should they validate their beliefs, just because you have to constantly do so yourself.

So stop bringing it up.

Or, you know, they could be annoyed at being preached to nearly 24/7. I'd get pissed too.

That's probably because they're not being preached to 24/7 about Allah or Vishnu or Xenu or what-have-you.
They don't want to hear the Truth. Its a deliberate choice to reject the Truth whether they realize it or not.
What makes yours the absolute Truth? Why not any other religion?
Seriously. Christianity is ubiquitous, how is it even really possible for anyone to have not heard of it? More likely, they've heard of it and declared it a fairy tale. People don't believe because they've never heard of the story (you people WON'T shut up about it), they don't believe because it frankly is really really REALLY hard to believe, or to be more precise: THE BIBLE HAS ALMOST NOTHING IN COMMON WITH REALITY!!!!
You might have had more success if your god-the-father wasn't such an amoral fuckstick.
Also, "Truth" is subjective.
Why, oh why do I have a feeling that the brother's reaction was less to do with "what happens when we die" and more to do with a big fat "you're a stupid, hellbound sinner, and that will not change unless you disavow anything you know, and praise Jaysus just like I do," and the sister, less the mention of the Bible, and more the mention "The Bible says..."
Your brother and sister are probably just so damn tired of you reiterating "The Truth" whenever they see you. So, you starting all over again makes them react with "Not again with the drivel! Shut up already, we know all that and then some. That's why we are atheists, stupid."
I'm an atheist and I sometimes quote passages from the Bible to myself when I can't sleep. What level of intensity can you find in falling asleep from it? Maybe the Bible is part of one of those "false religions and spiritual ideas" you talk about?
"I have had an unbelieving brother have a visceral reaction to a discussion about God and what happens when we die and an unbelieving sister go ballistic over just the mention of the bible"
Pics or it didn't happen. Myself, the only reaction to reading the Bible was for it to reinforce my Atheism. After all:
'Properly read the Bible is the most potent force for Atheism ever conceived'
-Isaac Asimov
"[[So people get sent to hell for not having come across certain 'knowledge?']]"
Well, you lot will. And for good reason:

You clearly haven't read yours, pegmo (and everyone on Ruptured Retards). As we Atheists have. Cover to cover. Thus we have the ultimate weapon to use against you: your own Scripture, with all the contradictions, errors, inconsistencies, hypocrisies and evil therein.
'Know your enemy and know yourself, and you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles'
-Sun Tzu, "The Art of War"
It's not the Bible, It's not Jesus, it's you and your insistance of yammering on about it. This is a serious disconnect with you people, you'll never accept the fact that your entire life has become Bible preaching over, well, a life. Worse, being on RaptureReady marks you as a Rapture nut so you are probably barking dogma half the time and know very little of whats in the Bible anyway.
"False religions and spiritual ideas don't seem to bother people"
What?! You people go ballistic in fear and hate filled comments anytime another religion is portrayed as good or comparible to yours. By your logic: You must be afraid they're true.
Confused?
